Low-Profile Shear Force Tactile Sensor Based on Optical Methods

Nathan A. Dvorak et al.

Summary: An electrically driven shear stress tactile sensor has been experimentally demonstrated. The sensor design incorporates a ultrathin platinum Ohmic contact conformally coated around elastic nanopillar structures by atomic layer deposition. The intensity of emitted light from InGaN is reduced when the nanopillar structures deform upon the application of an external shear force, allowing for direct measurement of the magnitude and direction of the force.

Ultrathin Tactile Sensors with Directional Sensitivity and a High Spatial Resolution

Nathan Dvorak et al.

Summary: An ultrathin tactile sensor with directional sensitivity, utilizing GaN nanopillar LEDs, demonstrates high spatial resolution mapping. The sensor array exhibits two-dimensional directional sensitivity with a dynamic range of 1-30 mN and an accuracy of +/-1.3 mN. The sensor successfully tracks and maps external force movements, while also registering fingertip movements and fingerprint patterns.

Summary: This study developed a force mapping method based on a light nano-antenna array with the use of piezo-phototronic effect, achieving high-resolution dynamic mapping of cell-generated force. The methodology can be applied for fundamental study of cardiomyocyte behavior and provide valuable information for heart-related research.
