Improved design and experimental demonstration of ultrahigh-Q C6-symmetric H1 hexapole photonic crystal nanocavities

Kenta Takata et al.

Summary: We have successfully designed an H1 photonic crystal nanocavity with a Q factor exceeding 108. By varying structural modulation parameters, we achieved such a high Q factor, while other nanocavities require more complex optimizations. This improvement in Q factor was achieved through a gradual variation in effective optical confinement potential. Our work elevates the performance of the H1 PCN to the ultrahigh-Q level and paves the way for its large-scale arrays with unconventional functionalities.

Angular-Dependent Klein Tunneling in Photonic Graphene

Zhaoyang Zhang et al.

Summary: The Klein paradox refers to the perfect tunneling of relativistic particles through high potential barriers, which is responsible for the exceptional conductive properties of graphene. Recent studies have explored this phenomenon in atomic condensates, topological photonics, and phononics. In this study, the authors experimentally observed perfect Klein transmission in a 2D photonic system (photonic graphene) and measured its angular dependence. Interestingly, they found that increasing the barrier height suppresses the decay of Klein transmission with angle, in agreement with the Dirac equation.
