Reconfigurable metasurfaces towards commercial success

Tian Gu et al.

Summary: Reconfigurable optical metasurfaces have emerged as a significant field in photonics research, development, and commercialization. They offer compact, lightweight, and energy-efficient optical systems with unprecedented performance and on-demand dynamic functions. However, their practical deployment faces challenges in scalable control, manufacturing, and control. This Review surveys the state-of-the-art of reconfigurable metasurface technologies and their applications, focusing on examples such as spaceborne remote sensing, active beam steering, and light field displays. It also highlights key research advances necessary for their transition from laboratory curiosity to commercial reality.

Advanced liquid crystal devices for augmented reality and virtual reality displays: principles and applications

Kun Yin et al.

Summary: Liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and photonic devices are crucial for augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR). The emerging HDR mini-LED backlit LCDs improve image quality and brightness while reducing power consumption for VR displays. High-resolution-density and high-brightness liquid-crystal-on-silicon (LCoS) show promise as image sources for see-through AR displays, especially in high ambient lighting conditions.

Metasurface optics for on-demand polarization transformations along the optical path

Ahmed H. Dorrah et al.

Summary: By using metasurfaces to independently shape the polarization state of a light beam at each point in space along its propagation direction, longitudinally variable polarization optical components are demonstrated; a new class of polarizers and wave plates based on metasurfaces can impart an arbitrarily chosen polarization response along the propagation direction, regardless of the incident polarization; this approach allows for the desired propagation-dependent polarization response to be enacted without prior knowledge of the incident polarization, expanding the use of polarization in the design of multifunctional metasurfaces.
