Step towards a consistent treatment of chiral theories at higher loop order: The abelian case

Adriano Cherchiglia

Summary: As recently pointed out, regularization schemes defined in four-dimensions may also face inconsistencies in the presence of chiral fermions. In this work, we extend this analysis to two-loop order using an abelian chiral model as working example, and discuss in detail how a consistent version of the method can be envisaged using the implicit regularization.

Gauge invariance and finite counterterms in chiral gauge theories

Claudia Cornella et al.

Summary: We derive the finite one-loop counterterm to restore the broken Ward Identities in chiral gauge theories caused by the regularization scheme. Our analytic expression is applicable to a wide range of regularizations that satisfy certain general properties. By using the background field method, which ensures background gauge invariance, we focus on renormalizable chiral theories with arbitrary gauge group and fermions in general representations. Our approach can also be extended to theories involving scalars, such as the Standard Model, or non-renormalizable theories, such as the SMEFT. As a specific application, we calculate the finite one-loop counterterm in the Standard Model using dimensional regularization and the Breitenlohner-Maison-'t Hooft-Veltman prescription for gamma(5).

Two-loop application of the Breitenlohner-Maison/'t Hooft-Veltman scheme with non-anticommuting γ5: full renormalization and symmetry-restoring counterterms in an abelian chiral gauge theory

Hermes Belusca-Maieto et al.

Summary: The study applies the BMHV scheme to investigate an abelian chiral gauge theory with non-anticommuting gamma(5) at the two-loop level. The full structure of symmetry-restoring counterterms up to the two-loop level is determined, revealing that ultraviolet divergences cannot be completely canceled by counterterms generated by field and parameter renormalization. Additionally, the paper establishes a two-loop methodology based on the quantum action principle and direct computations of Slavnov-Taylor identity breakings, which can also be applied to nonabelian gauge theories.
