Purely Virtual Particles in Quantum Gravity, Inflationary Cosmology and Collider Physics

Summary: In this paper, the concept of purely virtual particles and their uses in quantum gravity, primordial cosmology, and collider physics are reviewed. The introduction of fakeons, which mediate interactions without appearing among the incoming and outgoing states, is discussed. The paper also explores the classical limit of a theory with physical particles and fakeons, as well as the implications of quantum gravity for primordial cosmology and new physics beyond the standard model.

Non-unitarity of Minkowskian non-local quantum field theories

Summary: We demonstrate that Minkowskian non-local quantum field theories are not unitary, as opposed to the case of Euclidean non-local scalar field which satisfies the Cutkosky rules. The breaking of unitarity in Minkowskian theory is clearly identified.

Confinement and renormalization group equations in string-inspired nonlocal gauge theories

Summary: This study investigates the confinement conditions and beta function in the strong coupling regime of nonlocal non-Abelian gauge theories obtained through weak perturbation theory. By extending confinement criteria from local to nonlocal theory and showing how infinite derivatives are active in both UV and infrared limits, the study provides proof of confinement and demonstrates proper recovery of asymptotic freedom in the limit of infinite nonlocality energy scale M.

Renormalization group in six-derivative quantum gravity

Summary: The study derives the one-loop beta functions for the four-derivative terms in a minimal six-derivative quantum gravity theory in four spacetime dimensions. It shows that the theory is asymptotically free under certain conditions, describing free gravitons but may encounter ghostlike states at different energy scales. The possibility of extending the theory with operators cubic in Riemann tensor to address this issue is proposed.
