Prediction of spatial saturated hydraulic conductivity at the upper soil layer using soil class and terrain attributes

Ajoy Kumar Saha et al.

Summary: Knowledge of soil hydraulic properties is crucial for solving soil and water management problems in agriculture, ecology, and environmental issues. This research aimed to generate saturated hydraulic conductivity information using multiple linear regression (MLR) and support vector regression (SVR) techniques, developing a spatial distribution map for an agricultural landscape. The SVR model outperformed the MLR model in the modeling process, but tended to underestimate higher K-s values. The spatial variability map of K-s for the topsoil layer can be generated from soil texture information and terrain attributes for facilitating agro-hydrological model development in data-limited areas.

Distributive analysis of soil loss in the Abbay River Basin in Ethiopia after watershed management interventions

Wael M. Khairy

Summary: Inadequate research on soil loss and sediment concentrations in streams led to concerns about the impacts of water and land management. A study in the Abbay Basin in Ethiopia examined the effects of watershed management interventions on soil loss, sediment loads, and sediment delivery ratio, showing a 10% reduction in soil loss and an 11% decrease in sediment load compared to long-term averages. This highlights the success of watershed management in reducing soil erosion and sediment transport in the area.

Estimation of soil erosion using RUSLE modeling and geospatial tools in a tea production watershed (Chisheke in Walungu), eastern Democratic Republic of Congo

Geant Basimine Chuma et al.

Summary: Soil erosion is a significant issue for agricultural production, particularly in highland regions, leading to topsoil losses and decreased soil fertility. This study estimated soil losses in the Chisheke watershed using the Revised Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) to support sustainable management efforts. The results showed varying soil loss rates depending on land-use and land cover changes, with farmers acknowledging the importance of soil and water conservation practices to mitigate the negative effects of erosion.

GIS-based soil maps as tools to evaluate land capability and suitability in a coastal reclaimed area (Ravenna, northern Italy)

Mauro De Feudis et al.

Summary: This study aimed to build land capability and suitability maps using a multi-thematic approach by GIS in a salt-affected coastal area of Italy. The results showed that most of the area is suitable for cultivation, but some areas are limited due to high sand content and sea water intrusion. Classifying lands based on land capability and suitability can help define the best agricultural practices in conflicting agricultural productivity and environmental impact areas.
