Advances in Amazonian Peatland Discrimination With Multi-Temporal PALSAR Refines Estimates of Peatland Distribution, C Stocks and Deforestation

Summary: Accurate mapping of peatlands is crucial to reduce uncertainties in estimates of carbon stocks and to aid in deforestation monitoring. By utilizing a combination of remote sensing technologies and machine learning classifiers, high accuracy peatland maps can be generated. The new map of the Pastaza Maranon Foreland Basin showed an increase in peatland area and adjustments in carbon stock estimates.
