Mapping Chinese annual gross primary productivity with eddy covariance measurements and machine learning

Xian-Jin Zhu et al.

Summary: This study conducted a regional study of annual gross primary productivity (AGPP) for grain production and terrestrial carbon sequestration based on 641 site measurements in China. The optimal mapping scheme was determined by analyzing various prediction tools, variable combinations, and mapping approaches, and the random forest regression tree model performed the best in predicting observed AGPP variations. Mapping AGPP through predicting AGPP per leaf area (PAGPP) showed the superior performance in explaining AGPP variations. This study provides a methodological support for mapping regional AGPP from site measurements.

An enhanced shuttleworth-wallace model for simulation of evapotranspiration and its components

Han Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, an enhanced version of the Shuttleworth-Wallace two-source model is proposed, which combines deep learning and Bayesian parameter optimization techniques to improve the estimation and partitioning of evapotranspiration and its components. The model's performance is verified using eddy correlation and stable water isotope observations, and the Bayesian model evidence is utilized for model evaluation and selection. The enhanced model provides more accurate simulation results and guidance for irrigation measures in urban forest areas.

Influence of modeling domain and meteorological forcing data on daily evapotranspiration estimates from a Shuttleworth-Wallace model using Sentinel-2 surface reflectance data

Nishan Bhattarai et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the applicability of the SW-S2 model in different climate gradients in California and assessed the impact of modeling domain and meteorological inputs on model outputs. The results showed that the size of the modeling domain had minimal influence on model performance, while the source and quality of meteorological data had a significant impact on model outputs. The study also suggested local bias correction as a method to improve model performance.

Spatiotemporal variations in the ratio of transpiration to evapotranspiration and its controlling factors across terrestrial biomes

Ruochen Cao et al.

Summary: Quantifying the ratio of transpiration to evapotranspiration (T/ET) is crucial for understanding and predicting the water cycle and energy balance. Three well-validated ET partitioning models were used to estimate T/ET at global fluxnet sites. Leaf area index was found to be the key driver of spatial variations in T/ET across sites, and there were discrepancies in factors controlling inter-annual variations in T/ET among the models.

Variability in Minimal-Damage Sap Flow Observations and Whole-Tree Transpiration Estimates in a Coniferous Forest

Junjun Yang et al.

Summary: This study quantified differences in whole-tree transpiration estimates in a secondary Qinghai spruce forest, illustrating the impact of incomplete diameter at breast height range on sapwood area estimation, as well as significant variations in sap flux density between different treatments. A correction function for sap flux density in the treatment group was obtained, leading to underestimation of daily sap flux density and whole-tree transpiration at the half-hour scale.

Comparison of Shuttleworth-Wallace and Dual Crop Coefficient Method for Estimating Evapotranspiration of a Tea Field in Southeast China

Haofang Yan et al.

Summary: The study used the S-W model and D-K method to estimate evaporation and transpiration in tea fields, finding that both methods were able to calculate E and T separately. However, the S-W model had slightly higher accuracy in estimating ETc compared to the D-K method.

The responses of photosynthetic light response parameters to temperature among different seasons in a coniferous plantation of subtropical China

Mingjie Xu et al.

Summary: This study conducted a 17-year continuous measurement to investigate the responses of photosynthesis to air temperature, revealing specific optimal temperature values for photosynthetic light response parameters in different seasons. The findings suggest a relationship between seasonal temperature changes and soil water content, which could potentially impact photosynthesis parameters.

Specific responses of canopy conductance to environmental factors in a coniferous plantation in subtropical China

Mingjie Xu et al.

Summary: Studying 12 years of flux data revealed that canopy conductance (gc) varies in response to environmental factors, with humidity and temperature affecting gc. Furthermore, divergent responses of gc to environmental factors were found in different climatic years.

Simulation of evapotranspiration and its components for the mobile dune using an improved dual-source model in semi-arid regions

Yongzhi Bao et al.

Summary: Accurate estimation of evapotranspiration is essential for understanding hydrological processes in semi-arid regions. The SWH model performed well in simulating ET and its components over four consecutive growing seasons in China's Horqin Sandy Land. Soil evaporation (E) accounted for a major fraction of ET and was mainly controlled by canopy stomatal conductance and soil moisture content.

Partitioning evapotranspiration based on the total ecosystem conductance fractions of soil, interception, and canopy in different biomes

My Ngoc Nguyen et al.

Summary: This study introduces a modified ecosystem conductance-based Priestley-Taylor (MEC-PT) algorithm for partitioning evapotranspiration (ET), showing superior performance compared to the original model and highlighting the importance of considering canopy dynamics and ecosystem behaviors in understanding ET components. Additionally, the study finds variations in transpiration/evapotranspiration (T/ET) ratios across different land cover types, with net radiation identified as a key driver controlling these variations.
