Integrated microRNA and transcriptome profiling reveals the regulatory network of embryo abortion in jujube

Jiangtao Du et al.

Summary: This study investigates the regulatory network of jujube embryo abortion using correlation analysis, artificial pollination, sugar content measurements, and multi-omics analysis. The results reveal that embryo abortion is a major factor contributing to the low kernel rate of cultivated jujube, and 21 days after pollination is a critical period for embryo abortion. Transcriptome, miRNA, and degradome sequencing identified differentially expressed genes and miRNA-target gene pairs involved in the regulation of embryo abortion during kernel development.

Contributions of sugar transporters to crop yield and fruit quality

Suying Wen et al.

Summary: The flux, distribution, and storage of soluble sugars are crucial for crop yield and the quality of horticultural products. Sugar transporters play a role in phloem loading and unloading, but the mechanisms of unloading and sugar storage in sink organs are less understood. Exploring the transport and storage mechanisms of carbohydrates in important storage organs will provide insights for genetic improvements in crop yield and fruit quality.

MdbHLH3 modulates apple soluble sugar content by activating phosphofructokinase gene expression

Jian-Qiang Yu et al.

Summary: This study reveals that the MdPFP beta gene regulates soluble sugar accumulation in apple by enhancing photosynthetic performance and sugar-metabolizing enzyme activities. Additionally, the transcription factor MdbHLH3 activates the expression of MdPFP beta gene, leading to increased photosynthetic rates and soluble sugar accumulation in apple.

Optimizing sampling design and sequencing strategy for the genomic analysis of quantitative traits in natural populations

Jefferson F. Paril et al.

Summary: Mapping the genetic basis of complex traits in outbreeding species across a landscape is crucial for understanding species adaptation. Sampling more populations across the landscape using pool sequencing can lead to higher power in quantitative trait locus detection and prediction accuracy, compared to individual sequencing. It is recommended to sample populations from areas with high genetic diversity for more effective genetic mapping.

Physicochemical and antioxidant activity of fruit harvested from eight jujube (Ziziphus jujuba Mill.) cultivars at different development stages

Min Yan et al.

Summary: Different cultivars of jujube fruit show similar chemical profiles but with great variation in amounts. The cultivar 'FS' exhibits relatively higher levels of ascorbic acid, catechin, epicatechin, rutin, proanthocyanidin, and antioxidant activity, suggesting potential as a natural antioxidant. During the development stages of jujube fruit, moisture, ascorbic acid, total polyphenol, catechin, epicatechin, proanthocyanidin, and rutin contents decrease, while fructose, glucose, sucrose, cAMP, and cGMP contents increase significantly. The antioxidant activity decreases as the fruits mature, making green jujube suitable for natural antioxidants and advanced ripening stages optimal for fresh fruit and commercial processing.

Genomic analyses of diverse wild and cultivated accessions provide insights into the evolutionary history of jujube

Mingxin Guo et al.

Summary: The Chinese jujube is an important perennial fruit tree crop with economic, ecological, and nutritional value. Through population genomic analysis, it was found that jujube's primary domestication center was in the Shanxi-Shaanxi area of China, before it spread into East and South China. Divergence events analysis suggested a divergence between Ziziphus acidojujuba and Ziziphus jujuba around 2.7 million years ago, indicating a possible long pre-domestication period. The study also identified genetic markers associated with seed-setting rate and fruit weight regulation in jujubes, providing insights into the genetic basis of jujube evolution and domestication.

Identification of genes associated with soluble sugar and organic acid accumulation in 'Huapi' kumquat (Fortunella crassifolia Swingle) via transcriptome analysis

Qing-Jiang Wei et al.

Summary: The levels and ratios of sugar and acid are important for fruit taste. Kumquat is an economically important citrus crop but information on sugar and acid metabolism is limited. Two kumquat varieties, RA and HP, were used to evaluate sugar and acid accumulation. HP accumulated more sugars but fewer organic acids than RA. Transcriptome analysis revealed differentially expressed genes related to sugar and acid accumulation.
