Alpha-Linolenic Acid Mediates Diverse Drought Responses in Maize (Zea mays L.) at Seedling and Flowering Stages

Xuejing Zi et al.

Summary: Water shortage caused by long-term drought is a serious stress factor for maize. This study used transcriptome and metabolomics analysis to study the effects of drought stress at seedling or flowering stages on maize. Through the analysis of genes and metabolites, the study identified key pathways related to flavonoid and phenylpropane biosynthesis, glutathione metabolism, and purine metabolism in response to drought stress.

The DREB A-5 Transcription Factor ScDREB5 From Syntrichia caninervis Enhanced Salt Tolerance by Regulating Jasmonic Acid Biosynthesis in Transgenic Arabidopsis

Jinyuan Liu et al.

Summary: Salinity is a major limiting factor in crop productivity. In this study, the researchers focused on ScDREB5, a transcription factor gene from a desiccation-tolerant moss, and found that its overexpression in Arabidopsis improved seed germination and seedling tolerance under salt stress. The overexpressing plants exhibited enhanced scavenging abilities of reactive oxygen species, upregulated stress-related gene expression, regulated ion homeostasis, and increased jasmonic acid content. These findings suggest that ScDREB5 is a promising candidate gene for crop salt stress breeding.

Expression dynamics of dehydration tolerance in the tropical plant Marchantia inflexa

Rose A. Marks et al.

Summary: Tolerance to prolonged water deficit in plants shows a continuum with dehydration tolerance and desiccation tolerance being extreme adaptations. This study characterizes expression dynamics in different genotypes of Marchantia inflexa during dehydration-rehydration, revealing little temporal synchronization among genotypes possibly due to genetic variation or constitutive expression. Understanding intraspecific variation in stress response highlights the complexity and variability of water stress tolerance.
