High killing rate of nematode and promotion of rice growth by synthetic volatiles from Bacillus strains due to enhanced oxidative stress response

Qurban Ali et al.

Summary: In this study, volatiles isolated from Bacillus spp. showed strong nematicidal activity against the plant parasitic nematode Aphelenchoides besseyi. Synthetic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) derived from these strains also exhibited high nematicidal activity. The mechanism of action involves the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which in turn affects important genes involved in rice plant growth promotion. Overall, this research highlights the potential of Bacillus strains and their VOCs as effective biocontrol agents against A. besseyi.

KEGG for taxonomy-based analysis of pathways and genomes

Minoru Kanehisa et al.

Summary: KEGG is a manually curated database resource that integrates various biological objects classified into systems, genomic, chemical, and health information. Through the KEGG identifier and URL links, users can retrieve and browse information for different biological objects, including pathway maps, hierarchy, and genomes. KEGG has also improved KO assignment annotation and included more eukaryotic genomes for better representation of organisms in the taxonomic tree. The taxonomy mapping enables analysis of the conservation of functional and physical links among genes in different organism groups.

Biocontrol of Diseases Caused by Phytophthora capsici and P. parasitica in Pepper Plants

Mila Santos et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Trichoderma aggressivum f. europaeum, T. longibrachiatum, Paecilomyces variotii, and T. saturnisporum as biological control agents against diseases caused by P. capsici and P. parasitica in pepper. In vitro and in vivo experiments were conducted to assess their antagonistic activities, and the expression patterns of five defense-related genes were analyzed in leaves. All four BCAs showed significant in vitro antagonistic activity against P. capsici and P. parasitica. Treatment with T. aggressivum f. europaeum, T. longibrachiatum, and P. variotii effectively reduced disease severity caused by both pathogens, while T. saturnisporum had the lowest effectiveness. Reinoculation with the BCAs improved disease control. The study suggests that these BCAs can be used as an alternative to chemicals to control pepper diseases with high success rates.

Characterization of a Cryptic NRPS Gene Cluster in Bacillus velezensis FZB42 Reveals a Discrete Oxidase Involved in Multithiazole Biosynthesis

Qiyao Shen et al.

Summary: The biosynthetic mechanism of polythiazole in microbial nonribosomal peptides (NRPs) has been uncovered, revealing the involvement of a cryptic NRPS gene cluster. The study also showed that the oxidation of polythiazole in NRPs is not catalyzed by integrated oxidase domains as previously believed, but by a standalone oxidase.

Thi Huyen Trang Trinh et al.

Summary: Among various organic wastes, shrimp shell powder was found to be the most suitable carbon/nitrogen source for producing antinematode compounds via Bacillus veleznesis RB.EK7 fermentation. The study optimized the fermentation process and identified two novel antinematode compounds. These compounds exhibited potential nematicidal effects and showed inhibition of the acetylcholinesterase enzyme.

Nematicidal Volatiles from Bacillus atrophaeus GBSC56 Promote Growth and Stimulate Induced Systemic Resistance in Tomato against Meloidogyne incognita

Muhammad Ayaz et al.

Summary: The Bacillus strain GBSC56 from Tibet region of China exhibited high nematicidal activity against plant nematodes, with three volatile compounds, DMDS, MIV, and 2-UD, showing strong efficacy. These volatiles induced oxidative stress in nematodes, leading to rapid death, while also enhancing the activity of antioxidant enzymes and promoting key genes related to plant growth. Additionally, defense-related genes in infested tomato plants were upregulated after treatment with certain volatiles, suggesting GBSC56's biocontrol potential against plant nematodes.

The Role of Surfactin Production by Bacillus velezensis on Colonization, Biofilm Formation on Tomato Root and Leaf Surfaces and Subsequent Protection (ISR) against Botrytis cinerea

Alexandra Stoll et al.

Summary: Many aspects of the role of lipopeptides in bacterial interaction with plants are still unclear. The concentration of lipopeptides produced by a strain directly correlates with its ability to colonize plant surfaces and trigger induced systemic resistance (ISR). Multiple factors, such as environmental stressors or compensation mechanisms, may also influence a strain's ability to effectively colonize a plant surface.
