Barley with improved drought tolerance: Challenges and perspectives

Ammar Elakhdar et al.

Summary: There is an urgent need to improve climate-resilient crops due to the increasingly erratic climate behavior affecting global food security. Current scientific efforts aim to understand the complex mechanisms behind drought resistance in cultivated barley and develop new cultivars with enhanced tolerance to drought. Understanding the impact of water stress on barley plants is challenging due to redundant regulatory pathways governed by multiple genes. Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of molecular regulation is key to developing barley cultivars with superior drought tolerance.

Rhizosphere Colonization Determinants by Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR)

Gustavo Santoyo et al.

Summary: Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are an eco-friendly alternative to chemical use in agriculture, but their efficacy as bioinoculants can be compromised by low colonization capacity in the rhizosphere. To improve colonization, highly competitive strains should be prioritized in field trials. PGPR utilize various mechanisms such as recognizing chemical signals and producing antioxidants to successfully colonize the rhizosphere, as well as producing antimicrobial compounds to inhibit phytopathogenic microorganisms.
