Improved yield and health benefits of watercress grown in an indoor vertical farm

Yufei Qian et al.

Summary: Watercress is a highly nutritious leafy crop with a rich phytonutrient profile. The use of blue light in vertical farm systems can significantly increase yield and glucosinolate content in watercress. Also, a previously unidentified glucosinolate was found in watercress grown in vertical farms.

Organic solar powered greenhouse performance optimization and global economic opportunity

Eshwar Ravishankar et al.

Summary: Greenhouses can use semitransparent organic solar cells (OSCs) to reduce energy demand while maintaining crop productivity. This study combines plant growth model and energy model to optimize the design and location of OSC-greenhouses, and finds that they can achieve high crop yield and economic value in diverse climates.

Evaluating recycling fertilizers for tomato cultivation in hydroponics, and their impact on greenhouse gas emissions

Aladdin Halbert-Howard et al.

Summary: The study found that recycling fertilizers can effectively replace synthetic mineral fertilizers in hydroponic cultivation systems without affecting the yield and nutrient uptake of tomato plants. Different types of fertilizers showed varying effects on tomato growth and yield, with S+V exhibiting the highest sugar concentration.

Validation of a building energy model of a hydroponic container farm and its application in urban design

Mariana Liebman-Pelaez et al.

Summary: Plant factories have emerged in urban areas to increase local food production, create job opportunities, and provide environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional agriculture. Container farms, a type of plant factory system, use artificial lighting and hydroponic farming practices to support crop production in urban settings regardless of climate conditions. By validating an EnergyPlus model of a hydroponic container farm in Boston, stakeholders can reliably predict energy usage and optimize the environmental performance of container farms.

Elicitation of biomolecules as host defense arsenals during insect attacks on tea plants (Camellia sinensis (L.) Kuntze)

Sudipta Naskar et al.

Summary: Tea plants and their pests have coevolved to exhibit pest responsive tolerance mechanisms, producing secondary metabolites that act as insect repellents and increase indigestibility in pests. These metabolites can also lower the nutrient quality of plant tissue, acting as predator attractants for specific pests.

Combination of red and blue light induces anthocyanin and other secondary metabolite biosynthesis pathways in an age-dependent manner in Batavia lettuce

Benny Jian Rong Sng et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that lettuce grown under a combination of red and blue light displayed better growth and accumulated more anthocyanin, with higher concentration in mature lettuce. The transcriptome response to red light was stronger in mature lettuce, inducing genes related to oxidation-reduction reaction and secondary metabolite biosynthesis. Key genes in the anthocyanin biosynthesis pathway were up-regulated in mature lettuce, while branching pathways for flavonol and lignin precursors were down-regulated.

Effect of LED Spectrum on the Quality and Nitrogen Metabolism of Lettuce Under Recycled Hydroponics

Jie Li et al.

Summary: Light quality optimization is an efficient method for improving the growth and quality of lettuce, with the addition of green, purple, and far-red light leading to increased vitamin C content and nitrogen metabolism conversion. The results suggest that light quality regulates nitrate reduction by influencing gene expression and enzyme activity related to nitrogen metabolism.

Semi-Transparent Organic Photovoltaics Applied as Greenhouse Shade for Spring and Summer Tomato Production in Arid Climate

Rebekah Waller et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated the feasibility of using flexible, roll-to-roll printed, semi-transparent OPV arrays as a roof shade for greenhouse hydroponic tomato production in arid southwestern U.S. Although fruit development and ripening were delayed in the OPV-shaded area, the total yields and fruit mass were not significantly different from the Control section.

Balancing crop production and energy harvesting in organic solar-powered greenhouses

Eshwar Ravishankar et al.

Summary: The study investigates the impact of adding semitransparent organic solar cells (ST-OSCs) to greenhouse structures on plant growth, finding that different OSC active layers have minimal effects on red leaf lettuce growth. OSCs also provide an opportunity for further light and thermal management in the greenhouse.
