Plant flavonoids: Classification, distribution, biosynthesis, and antioxidant activity

Nan Shen et al.

Summary: Flavonoids are natural polyphenol substances abundant in various plant-based foods. They have significant biological activities in both plants and humans, such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory effects. However, research on their distribution, biosynthesis, and health benefits remains limited. Future opportunities in flavonoid research include biotechnology, therapeutic phytoproducts, and exploring dietary flavonoid bioavailability.

Citrus Peel Flavonoid Extracts: Health-Beneficial Bioactivities and Regulation of Intestinal Microecology in vitro

Ping Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the extraction, component analysis, biological activity, and regulation of intestinal microbiota of citrus peel flavonoid extracts (CPFEs). The results showed that lemon had the highest total flavonoid content, while grapefruit, chachiensis, and lemon had the highest concentrations of naringin, hesperidin, and eriocitrin, respectively. CPFEs from grapefruit and chachiensis exhibited better antioxidant activity, alpha-glucosidase inhibitory activity, and sodium glycocholate binding ability. Furthermore, grapefruit and chachiensis CPFEs had positive effects on intestinal microecology, as they increased the relative abundance of Bifidobacterium spp. and the production of short-chain fatty acids.

Effect of magnesium application on the fruit coloration and sugar accumulation of navel orange (Citrus sinensis Osb.)

Xiaoman Liu et al.

Summary: This study found that the application of magnesium fertilizer at the appropriate dosage can significantly improve the yield and quality of navel oranges. The best results were achieved with a dosage of 150 g MgO per plant. The application of magnesium fertilizer increased the sucrose content in the pulp and decreased the chlorophyll content in the peel, promoting fruit ripening.

Three AP2/ERF family members modulate flavonoid synthesis by regulating type IV chalcone isomerase in citrus

Chenning Zhao et al.

Summary: CitCHIL1 enhances the accumulation of citrus flavanones and flavones by assisting the cyclization of naringenin chalcone. The transcription factors CitERF32, CitERF33, and CitRAV1 positively regulate the expression of CitCHIL1, forming a complex that enhances flavonoid production. This study provides insight into the molecular mechanisms underlying efficient flavonoid biosynthesis.
