Plant Interaction Patterns Shape the Soil Microbial Community and Nutrient Cycling in Different Intercropping Scenarios of Aromatic Plant Species

Yue Sun et al.

Summary: This study reveals that intercropping with mixed aromatic plant species in perennial woody orchards can improve soil nutrient cycling and land productivity. By comparing different tillage scenarios and intercropping treatments in apple orchards, it was found that the natural grass model with mixed aromatic plants had a significant impact on bacterial and fungal community diversity, dominant taxa abundance, co-occurrence networks, enzyme activity, and nutrient content in soil during fruit development stage.

Changes to bacterial communities and soil metabolites in an apple orchard as a legacy effect of different intercropping plants and soil management practices

Xiaolong Li et al.

Summary: This study used advanced sequencing technology to investigate the relationship between intercropping plants and soil microbial communities in apple orchards in arid and semi-arid regions. The results showed that intercropping can enrich the microbial diversity and nutrients in the soil, with the best effect observed when intercropping with licorice. This study suggests that intercropping with licorice may be a viable option for increasing apple orchard productivity.

Soil Metagenomics Reveals Effects of Continuous Sugarcane Cropping on the Structure and Functional Pathway of Rhizospheric Microbial Community

Ziqin Pang et al.

Summary: This study explored the impact of continuous cropping of sugarcane on the soil microbial community structure and functional pathways. It was found that continuous cropping significantly altered the physicochemical properties of the soil and the composition of bacterial and fungal communities. The decline in crop yield and changes in microbial community structures were mainly driven by pH and TS.

Intercropping With Aromatic Plants Increased the Soil Organic Matter Content and Changed the Microbial Community in a Pear Orchard

Yan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study found that root exudates from aromatic plants influenced the diversity, structure, and functional groups related to the N cycle of soil microbial communities, ultimately increasing nitrogen release in orchard soil.

Fungal alpha diversity influences stochasticity of bacterial and fungal community assemblies in soil aggregates in an apple orchard

Wei Zheng et al.

Summary: This study reveals the significant impact of agricultural practices and soil aggregates on the diversity, composition, and stochasticity of bacterial and fungal communities. Bacterial community assemblies are more stochastic in silt+clay compared to macroaggregates, with fungi affecting bacterial community assembly and stochasticity increasing as interactions between bacteria and fungi decrease. The results enhance our mechanistic understanding of bacterial and fungal community assembly processes and co-existence patterns in soil aggregates.

Edaphic variables are better indicators of soil microbial functional structure than plant-related ones in subtropical broad-leaved forests

Jingmin Cheng et al.

Summary: Soil microorganisms in subtropical broad-leaved forests play important roles in ecosystem functioning. Using functional microarray (GeoChip 4.0), this study examined soil microbial functional structure in three types of SBFs. The study found significant differences in microbial functional structure among SBFs, with mixed evergreen-deciduous broad-leaved forests showing higher functional diversity and more complex gene networks. Edaphic variables such as soil pH and nutrient content were found to be better indicators of soil microbial functional structure in SBFs compared to plant-related ones.

Genome-resolved metagenomics reveals role of iron metabolism in drought-induced rhizosphere microbiome dynamics

Ling Xu et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that drought leads to significant and highly conserved changes in the root microbiome, involving carbohydrate and secondary metabolite transport functionalities, as well as bacterial iron transport and metabolism functionalities. Iron homeostasis within the root is impacted by drought stress, and the loss of a plant phytosiderophore iron transporter affects microbial community composition.

Seasonal changes in soil properties, microbial biomass and enzyme activities across the soil profile in two alpine ecosystems

Ying Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that soil properties and microbial biomass generally decline with increasing soil depth in alpine ecosystems on the Tibetan Plateau, while they are more variable during the growing season. In contrast, extracellular enzyme activities show insignificant variation across the soil profile and with time.
