Microbiome-based therapeutics

Matthew T. Sorbara et al.

Summary: Microbiome-based therapeutics have the potential to reduce disease susceptibility and enhance disease resistance. This review discusses the major bacterial phyla associated with health benefits and explores various microbiome-based therapeutics, including fecal microbiota transplantation, bacterial consortia, engineered symbiotic bacteria, and diet and prebiotics. It also highlights the challenges in therapeutic development and regulatory hurdles for clinical trials and manufacturing.

The Roles of Monocytes and Macrophages in Behcet's Disease With Focus on M1 and M2 Polarization

Lisa Hirahara et al.

Summary: Behcet's disease is a systemic inflammatory disease characterized by recurrent oral ulcers, genital ulcers, cutaneous inflammation, and uveitis. The pathogenesis of BD is not fully understood, but it is likely a result of genetic susceptibility and environmental factors. This review discusses the roles of monocytes and macrophages in BD and their potential as therapeutic targets.

Maturation of the oral microbiota during primary teeth eruption: a longitudinal, preliminary study

He Xu et al.

Summary: The development of oral microbiota in children is influenced by both age increase and teeth eruption. The microbial quantity and species in saliva change more significantly over time. Around 70% of bacteria initially colonized in plaque persist until the completion of primary dentition. The microbial diversity in oral microbiota varies greatly during the full eruption of anterior teeth.

Summary: Recent advances in next-generation sequencing technologies have greatly improved our understanding of the oral microbiome. It is crucial to study the development of the oral microbiome in order to identify the interactions and adaptations of bacterial communities and their impact on the host environment. This knowledge can contribute to the prevention and treatment of various pathological conditions.

Crosstalk between the oral microbiota, mucosal immunity, and the epithelial barrier regulates oral mucosal disease pathogenesis

Dongjia Lin et al.

Summary: Oral mucosal disease (OMD), also known as soft tissue oral disease, is a range of disorders affecting the mucosa and soft tissue in the oral cavity. The unclear etiology may involve dysbiosis of oral mucosa and saliva-resident microbiota, impacting immune response and epithelial barrier function, leading to OMD. Research suggests diverse oral microbial dysbiosis in different diseases, implying potential causal pathogens across various oral pathologies. This literature review explores how microbial dysbiosis interacts with mucosal adaptive immune cells and the epithelial barrier in OMD, focusing on representative OMDs including oral candidiasis, oral lichen planus, recurrent aphthous ulcer, oral leukoplakia, and oral squamous cell carcinoma.
