Fungi in Deep-Sea Ecosystems of the World Ocean: A Review

L. Zvereva et al.

Summary: This review provides an analysis of literature data on the taxonomic diversity, occurrence, abundance, and distribution of microscopic fungi in deep-sea pelagic and benthic habitats of the World Ocean. The homology between deep-sea species and terrestrial species is highlighted, and the adaptations that enable fungi to survive in extreme conditions of bottom sediments in the World Ocean are discussed.

Transcriptomic Analysis Reveals Common Adaptation Mechanisms Under Different Stresses for Moderately Piezophilic Bacteria

Han Wang et al.

Summary: Recent studies have found that bacterial strains isolated from surface environments and transferred under ambient pressure for decades still possess piezophilic characteristics under high hydrostatic pressure. This suggests that piezophiles may not be restricted to habitats with high pressure and have developed a common adaptation strategy to cope with various stresses. Transcriptomic analysis revealed differential gene expression related to antioxidant defense, intracellular compatible solute accumulation, and membrane lipid biosynthesis, which are crucial for cells to survive under high hydrostatic pressure.

Molecular Responses to High Hydrostatic Pressure in Eukaryotes: Genetic Insights from Studies on Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Fumiyoshi Abe

Summary: High hydrostatic pressure has negative effects on biological systems, especially for organisms in lands or shallow seas, while deep-sea piezophiles have attracted scientific attention for their preference for high pressure. Humans also experience high pressure during exercise and space exploration, yet the mechanisms behind biological responses to high pressures remain unclear. Exploring the response of S. cerevisiae to high pressure at the molecular level can provide insights into how cells adapt to increased pressure.

High hydrostatic pressure shapes the development and production of secondary metabolites of Mariana Trench sediment fungi

Qingqing Peng et al.

Summary: The hadal biosphere remains one of the least understood ecosystems on Earth, with recent studies revealing diverse and active fungal communities in hadal sediment. Research on these fungi is limited, but they have shown good growth and potential for secondary metabolite production under high hydrostatic pressure.
