Surface sterilization for isolation of endophytes: Ensuring what (not) to grow

Pramod K. Sahu et al.

Summary: Endophytic microbiota offers a potential source of medicines for various ailments with applications in agriculture, food, cosmetics, etc. The success of isolating true endophytes depends on proper surface sterilization to remove epiphytic microbes. This review provides a comprehensive overview of sterilants and sterilization methods for isolating endophytic microbes, as well as the rationale behind their use.

A fungal extracellular effector inactivates plant polygalacturonase-inhibiting protein

Wei Wei et al.

Summary: In this study, researchers identified an effector named SsPINE1 that can interact with and inactivate host PGIPs. The presence of SsPINE1 enhances the necrotrophic virulence of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum and reduces the resistance of plants against the fungus.

Genetic Diversity and Population Structure of Head Blight Disease Causing Fungus Fusarium graminearum in Northern Wheat Belt of India

Noyonika Kaul et al.

Summary: This study conducted a genetic analysis of the head blight pathogen in wheat-producing regions of India, revealing the presence of multiple haplotypes and genetic variations. The genetic diversity was found to be primarily driven by differences within populations. The population structure of the pathogen in Punjab showed evidence of a balancing selection mechanism.
