Effects of bowel preparation on intestinal bacterial associated urine and faecal metabolites and the associated faecal microbiome

Sam T. R. Powles et al.

Summary: Bowel cleansing temporarily disrupts bacterial alpha diversity in feces, but has no significant impact on fecal and urine metabolic profiles.

Spatial Characteristics of Colonic Mucosa-Associated Gut Microbiota in Humans

Li Jiao et al.

Summary: Limited data exists on the spatial distribution of colonic bacteria in humans. This study investigated the bacterial composition in different segments of the colon in healthy adults, finding unique bacterial communities in each individual with no significant differences across colon segments except for distinct differences between rectal and fecal bacteria.

Analysis of colonic mucosa-associated microbiota using endoscopically collected lavage

Eiji Miyauchi et al.

Summary: Colonic lavage samples are useful for analyzing the mucosal microbiota in humans, as they contain a higher amount of bacterial DNA and are less contaminated with host DNA compared to other types of samples. The bacterial composition of lavage samples is intermediate between feces and biopsy, with mucosal bacteria enriched in biopsy also present in lavage samples. Additionally, differences in mucosal microbes between non-smokers and smokers can be detected in lavage samples, highlighting its potential for research on human mucosal microbiota.

Prevalence, Abundance, and Virulence of Adherent-Invasive Escherichia coli in Ulcerative Colitis, Colorectal Cancer, and Coeliac Disease

Mireia Lopez-Siles et al.

Summary: The study found that adherent-invasive Escherichia coli (AIEC) may be associated with both Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), but not with colorectal cancer (CRC). Additionally, further research on E. coli strains in celiac disease (CeD) would be of interest.

Analysis of Gut Microbiota in Patients with Breast Cancer and Benign Breast Lesions

Comparison of sampling methods in assessing the microbiome from patients with ulcerative colitis

Dan Kim et al.

Summary: The microbiomes of stool, luminal contents, and biopsy were significantly different, but a correlation was found between stool and luminal contents in Procrustes and Mantel tests. While the stool microbiome differed between patients with UC and healthy controls, no differences were observed in the microbiomes of luminal content and biopsy samples between the two groups. The microbiome of luminal contents during colonoscopy can predict UC.

Associations of fecal microbial profiles with breast cancer and nonmalignant breast disease in the Ghana Breast Health Study

Doratha A. Byrd et al.

Summary: The gut microbiota may influence breast cancer development by regulating hormonal, metabolic and immunologic pathways. Associations between fecal bacteria and both breast cancer and nonmalignant breast disease were studied in Ghana, with findings indicating strong and similar correlations with both conditions. This suggests potential microbial mechanisms of breast disease.

Multivariable association discovery in population-scale meta-omics studies

Summary: The paper introduces a statistical model called MaAsLin 2 for multivariable associations in population-scale microbial community studies, which has been extensively validated. The authors highlight the importance and challenges of multivariable association analysis in microbiome research, and propose a new method to handle such complex data.

Intestinal microbiota influences clinical outcome and side effects of early breast cancer treatment

Safae Terrisse et al.

Summary: This study found that specific gut commensals overabundant in breast cancer patients compared with healthy individuals have a negative impact on the prognosis of breast cancer, are modulated by chemotherapy, and may influence weight gain and neurological side effects of breast cancer therapies. Further prospective validation of these findings in adjuvant and neoadjuvant settings is warranted.

Intestinal Microbiota in Postmenopausal Breast Cancer Patients and Controls

Romy Aarnoutse et al.

Summary: The study found that there were no differences in intestinal microbiota richness, diversity, and composition between postmenopausal breast cancer patients and controls. However, an increased relative abundance of Dialister and Veillonellaceae was observed in breast cancer patients scheduled for adjuvant treatment, which may be caused by a relative decrease in other bacteria rather than an absolute increase. Further research on a more homogeneous group of treatment-naive patients is advised for future studies on the role of intestinal microbiota in breast cancer.

Faecal Microbiota Composition Varies between Patients with Breast Cancer and Healthy Women: A Comparative Case-Control Study

Christine Bobin-Dubigeon et al.

Summary: This study found that early breast cancer patients have decreased microbial diversity, increased relative abundance of Firmicutes, and decreased relative abundance of Bacteroidetes in their intestinal microbiota compared to healthy controls. Additionally, a trend towards decreased relative abundance of Odoribacter sp., Butyricimonas sp., and Coprococcus sp. was observed in the patients.
