Multidrug Resistance (MDR): A Widespread Phenomenon in Pharmacological Therapies

Alessia Catalano et al.

Summary: Multidrug resistance, including resistance to anticancer agents and antimicrobial drugs, is a significant concern in public health. The widespread use of antibiotics has led to the emergence of pathogenic bacteria resistant to multiple drugs, and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic may worsen antimicrobial resistance. Nanodrug delivery systems have shown promise in overcoming resistance.

Toxic/Bioactive Peptide Synthesis Genes Rearranged by Insertion Sequence Elements Among the Bloom-Forming Cyanobacteria Planktothrix

Elisabeth Entfellner et al.

Summary: This study investigated the role of insertion sequence (IS) elements in the distribution and functionality of toxic/bioactive peptide synthesis pathways in the freshwater cyanobacteria Planktothrix spp. The results showed that IS elements influenced chromosome size but had a minor share in chromosomal variation. Gene loss processes and horizontal gene transfer were the major contributors to genomic variation. There was no increased IS element frequency near peptide synthesis gene clusters, but there was a tendency for colocalization of these clusters on the chromosome.

Harmful algal blooms and associated fisheries damage in East Asia: Current status and trends in China, Japan, Korea and Russia

Setsuko Sakamoto et al.

Summary: Occurrences of harmful algal blooms (HABs) and associated fisheries damage have been continuously monitored since the 1970s along the coasts of East Asia. The highest bloom numbers were recorded in 1980 (Japan), in 1998 (Korea) and in 2003 (China), followed by decreasing trends in these countries. The shift in microalgal species composition, from dominance by diatoms to dinoflagellates after the 1980s in Korea and from diatoms to small haptophytes and cyanobacteria after 2013 in eastern Russia, has been observed.

Effects of algae proliferation and density current on the vertical distribution of odor compounds in drinking water reservoirs in summer

Tianhao Wu et al.

Summary: The research found that odor compounds in reservoirs mainly come from phytoplankton, with higher concentrations in the subsurface chlorophyll maxima layer and a relationship with density currents in the hypolimnion layer. Both phytoplankton proliferation events and heavy storm events are important risk factors increasing odor compounds in reservoirs. Controlling algal bloom, implementing in-situ profile monitoring systems, and using depth-adjustable pumping systems can greatly reduce the risk of odor problems in reservoirs used as water supplies for large cities.

Stochastic trophic level index model: A new method for evaluating eutrophication state

Yang Ding et al.

Summary: The study introduced a probability density function and proposed the stochastic trophic level index model (STLI) to comprehensively evaluate the eutrophication state of a region by quantifying the risk of each trophic level, which can be used for uncertainty and risk assessment.

Risk assessment of antibiotic resistance genes in the drinking water system

Yaru Hu et al.

Summary: This study conducted a risk assessment of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the drinking water systems, revealing that the contamination of ARGs and antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) in drinking water reservoirs poses significant challenges for drinking water treatment efficiency and affects drinking water safety.

Altered functional properties of the codling moth Orco mutagenized in the intracellular loop-3

Yuriy V. Bobkov et al.

Summary: Amino acid substitutions within the insect olfactory receptor co-receptor (Orco) have been shown to influence its pharmacological properties, with a fixed substitution in Ditrysia facilitating optimized functionality of the cation channel. These findings provide further evidence of the importance of the intracellular loop-3 (ICL-3) in basic functional properties of insect Orco and Orco/OR channels.

Microbial diversity characteristics and the influence of environmental factors in a large drinking-water source

Tingting Jiang et al.

Summary: Environmental factors play a crucial role in shaping the microbial community in water sources, affecting the diversity of bacteria and fungi. Bacteria were predominantly influenced by seasonal variations, while fungi were mainly impacted by phosphorus levels in the water.

Microbial Find, Inform, and Test Model for Identifying Spatially Distributed Contamination Sources: Framework Foundation and Demonstration of Ruminant Bacteroides Abundance in River Sediments

Corinne Wiesner-Friedman et al.

Summary: This study successfully identified the sources of ruminant Bacteroides microbial marker BoBac in rivers through microbial source tracking technology and spatial prediction models, revealing a link to land-applied manure from animal feeding operations. These findings are significant for understanding the association between animal feeding operations and microbial pollution, as well as the role of sediment as a reservoir for pollution.

A machine learning approach for early warning of cyanobacterial bloom outbreaks in a freshwater reservoir

Yongeun Park et al.

Summary: Understanding harmful algal blooms is crucial for protecting aquatic ecosystems and human health. ANN and SVM models were used in this study to predict algae alert levels in a freshwater reservoir, with the ANN model outperforming the SVM model. A sampling frequency of 6-7 days was found to be effective for early warning intervals.

From Water into Sediment-Tracing Freshwater Cyanobacteria via DNA Analyses

Ebuka Canisius Nwosu et al.

Summary: This study used high-throughput sequencing and ASV analysis to compare cyanobacterial composition in different sampling points in Lake Tiefer See. The results suggest that cyanobacteria in sediments reflect the composition in the water column, but total cyanobacterial abundances varied between sediment depths.
