Methyl-Based Methanogenesis: an Ecological and Genomic Review

Clifton Bueno P. de Mesquita et al.

Summary: Methyl-based methanogenesis is one of the three broad categories of archaeal anaerobic methanogenesis, and it is recognized as an important source of methane in various environments.

Cultivation and biogeochemical analyses reveal insights into methanogenesis in deep subseafloor sediment at a biogenic gas hydrate site

Taiki Katayama et al.

Summary: This study reveals the presence of potential methanogenic activity and living methanogens in hydrate-bearing sediments from the eastern Nankai Trough. Hydrogenotrophic methanogens were found to be dominant, followed by methylotrophic methanogens. The study also observed a sudden decline in methane production rate at temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius.

Mineralogical control on methylotrophic methanogenesis and implications for cryptic methane cycling in marine surface sediment

Ke-Qing Xiao et al.

Summary: Minerals have been proposed to protect organic carbon from degradation, but the mechanism behind this is not well understood. This study found that clay minerals in marine surface sediment strongly adsorb methylamines, reducing their concentration in the dissolved pool. The presence of clay minerals also slows methane production and reduces the final methane produced. X-ray absorption spectroscopy revealed that reversible adsorption and occlusive protection of methylamines in clay interlayers are responsible for the decrease in methane production. This research highlights the importance of mineral-organic carbon interactions in controlling methane production in marine sediments and provides new insights into the role of adsorption in methane cycling.

Methyl-compounds driven benthic carbon cycling in the sulfate-reducing sediments of South China Sea

Lei Xu et al.

Summary: A cryptic methane cycle was found in sulfate-reducing sediments from the continental shelf of the northern South China Sea, driven by methyl-compounds and potentially fueling AOM. Methanogenesis primarily occurs through the methylotrophic pathway, and AOM rates are supported by alternative electron acceptors in this environment.

Microbial Communities Under Distinct Thermal and Geochemical Regimes in Axial and Off-Axis Sediments of Guaymas Basin

Andreas Teske et al.

Summary: Cold seeps and hydrothermal vents are seafloor habitats fueled by subsurface energy sources, coexisting in Guaymas Basin and structuring microbial communities at the sediment surface based on thermal regimes and energy sources. Different geochemical and microbial differences are observed among hot, temperate, cold seep, and background sites, with microbial lineages catalyzing various biogeochemical processes.
