Genomic analysis of the zoonotic ST73 lineage containing avian and human extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC)

Andre Becker S. Saidenberg et al.

Summary: Extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) is a globally distributed pathogen associated with human and companion animal diseases, while avian pathogenic pathotype (APEC) severely impacts poultry health and production. The similarities between APEC and human ExPEC suggest a potential for zoonotic transmission.

Stable antibiotic resistance and rapid human adaptation in livestock-associated MRSA

Marta Matuszewska et al.

Summary: The transmission of MRSA from livestock to humans results in a faster adaptation to the human host than the loss of antibiotic resistance. Additionally, the stable inheritance of resistance-associated MGEs suggests that the impact of reducing antibiotic and zinc oxide use in European farms on livestock-associated MRSA will be slow to occur.

Nasal Staphylococcus aureus and S. pseudintermedius carriage in healthy dogs and cats: a systematic review of their antibiotic resistance, virulence and genetic lineages of zoonotic relevance

Idris Nasir Abdullahi et al.

Summary: The study examines the molecular ecology of Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus pseudintermedius, and their methicillin-resistant strains in healthy dogs and cats to understand bacterial zoonosis. Data analysis shows higher carriage rates of S. aureus in dogs, whereas S. pseudintermedius in cats, with notable antimicrobial resistance among MRSA/MRSP isolates. Further research is needed on isolates from countries with under-studied nasal staphylococci isolates.

Mechanisms of Linezolid Resistance Among Clinical Staphylococcus spp. in Spain: Spread of Methicillin- and Linezolid-Resistant S. epidermidis ST2

Laura Ruiz-Ripa et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the mechanisms of linezolid resistance in clinical Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative staphylococci isolates from Spanish hospitals. Various molecular techniques were used to identify mutations and acquired resistance genes, as well as to determine the antimicrobial resistance and virulence profile of the isolates. The presence of the cfr gene and mutations in ribosomal proteins L3 and L4 were among the key findings in the study.

S. pseudintermedius and S. aureus lineages with transmission ability circulate as causative agents of infections in pets for years

Laura Ruiz-Ripa et al.

Summary: The study on staphylococci isolated from diseased pets in a veterinary hospital in Spain revealed a high prevalence of MR and MDR isolates, as well as notable virulence traits, indicating limited treatment options. This is the first identification of MRSA-ST398 and MRSP-ST68 in pets in Spain, suggesting the circulation of transmissible lineages with mobilizable resistomes as causative agents of infections among pets for years.

Whole genome sequencing of coagulase positive staphylococci from a dog-and-owner screening survey

Judit Sahin-Toth et al.

Summary: The study conducted in Hungary screened dogs and owners, finding a higher carriage rate of S. aureus in humans and more common presence of S. pseudintermedius in dogs. Although the isolates were generally susceptible to antibiotics, high tetracycline resistance was noted in S. pseudintermedius strains. Co-carried isolates shared similar resistance and virulence gene patterns, providing evidence for potential human-to-dog and dog-to-human transmission.

Summary: The study identified differences in genetic and epidemiological characteristics between CC398-MRSA and CC398-MSSA infections in invasive human infections in Spanish hospitals. While CC398-MSSA is emerging in invasive infections, CC398-MRSA is predominantly associated with livestock and shows distinct genetic markers.

Genomic and Phenotypic Analysis of Linezolid-Resistant Staphylococcus epidermidis in a Tertiary Hospital in Innsbruck, Austria

Silke Huber et al.

Summary: Whole genome sequencing is a useful tool for monitoring resistance mechanisms in bacteria. This retrospective study found that the major resistance mechanisms in linezolid-resistant Staphylococcus epidermidis (LRSE) were mutations in 23S rRNA and the presence of the cfr gene, with most LRSE isolates showing high resistance levels to linezolid. Linezolid usage was identified as the main factor contributing to the development of resistance, and monitoring of the cfr gene in LRSE and restriction of linezolid usage are potential key steps to reduce resistance and transmission.

Molecular Epidemiology of Clinical and Colonizing Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Isolates in Companion Animals

Hester Rynhoud et al.

Summary: This study investigated the molecular epidemiology of MRSA and MRSP isolates in dogs and cats, revealing significant differences in resistance and virulence factors between different sequence types. However, there were no differences in individual and clinical factors between predominant sequence types. The majority of isolates showed high levels of antimicrobial resistance, posing a potential threat to human and veterinary health. The phylogenetic clustering of isolates suggests potential importation of clones from countries with high volume of pet movements, warranting further investigation.

Penicillin susceptibility among invasive MSSA infections: a multicentre study in 16 Spanish hospitals

Olouwafemi Mistourath Mama et al.

Summary: The study investigated the prevalence of penicillin susceptibility among MSSA causing bloodstream infections in 16 Spanish hospitals and characterized the penicillin-susceptible MSSA (MSSA-PENS) isolates. The results showed a high penicillin susceptibility rate among MSSA, providing therapeutic opportunities for bloodstream infections. The emergence of new successful MSSA-PENS clones may be responsible for these data, and the detection of CC398 lineage or the absence of an IEC in some isolates raises questions about their potential animal origin.

Global Expansion of Linezolid-Resistant Coagulase-Negative Staphylococci

Vladimir Gostev et al.

Summary: Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) were historically considered non-pathogenic, but strains such as S. epidermidis, S. haemolyticus, and S. hominis have now been identified as opportunistic pathogens. The off-label use of linezolid for CoNS infections has led to the emergence of international linezolid-resistant lineages. Genetic analysis revealed the presence of common ancestors for linezolid-resistant strains in different countries.
