Methicillin- and Vancomycin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus From Humans and Ready-To-Eat Meat: Characterization of Antimicrobial Resistance and Biofilm Formation Ability

Taisir Saber et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the frequency, antimicrobial resistance, and biofilm-forming ability of MRSA and VRSA in RTE meat and food handlers. The presence of these bacteria in these sources highlights the potential danger and calls for stricter hygiene practices and antimicrobial surveillance plans to reduce the risk of spread.

A Review of Current Bacterial Resistance to Antibiotics in Food Animals

Chunming Xu et al.

Summary: The overuse of antibiotics in food animals has led to the development and widespread dissemination of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. This review provides an overview of the current situation of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and genes from food animal farms, manure, and wastewater, highlighting the potential risks to public health and discussing strategies to combat bacterial resistance.

Promising Anti-Biofilm Agents and Phagocytes Enhancers for the Treatment of Candida albicans Biofilm-Associated Infections

Yasmine H. Tartor et al.

Summary: This study investigated the inhibition of Candida albicans biofilms and the interactions between biofilms and phagocytes in the presence of essential oils, biological and chemical agents, or fluconazole. The results showed that cinnamon oil, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) were the most effective inhibitors of C. albicans biofilms, while fluconazole was ineffective. Additionally, it was found that phagocytes could rapidly engulf C. albicans cells in biofilms treated with cinnamon oil, Enterococcus faecalis cell-free supernatant (CFS), or SDS.

Extensive Drug-Resistant Salmonella enterica Isolated From Poultry and Humans: Prevalence and Molecular Determinants Behind the Co-resistance to Ciprofloxacin and Tigecycline

Norhan K. Abd El-Aziz et al.

Summary: The study revealed a prevalence of XDR Salmonella in poultry and humans, with a high proportion showing co-resistance to CIP and TIG. Multiple plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance genes were detected in the isolates, and inhibition of efflux pumps led to restored susceptibility to CIP and TIG in some isolates.

Antibiotics and Antibiotic Resistance Genes in Animal Manure - Consequences of Its Application in Agriculture

Magdalena Zalewska et al.

Summary: Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are a relatively new pollutant, with their rise attributed to the uncontrolled and widespread use of antibiotics. Livestock and poultry production is a critical hotspot for the development and dissemination of ARGs. The use of animal manure as a fertilizer may pose a severe threat to human and animal health.

Combination Therapy of Phage vB_KpnM_P-KP2 and Gentamicin Combats Acute Pneumonia Caused by K47 Serotype Klebsiella pneumoniae

Zijing Wang et al.

Summary: A novel bacteriophage named P-KP2 that specifically infects K. pneumoniae was isolated and tested for its therapeutic effect in animal experiments. P-KP2 has high lysis efficiency in vitro and shows homology with nine phages belonging to the KP15 virus family. The combined treatment of P-KP2 and gentamicin successfully rescued infected mice, indicating its potential for combating multi-drug resistant pathogens.

Effects of Ursolic Acid on Intestinal Health and Gut Bacteria Antibiotic Resistance in Mice

Fang Peng et al.

Summary: The study found that ursolic acid has positive effects on intestinal health and gut microbiota antibiotic-resistance in mice. It increased the average daily food intake of mice, improved jejunal morphology, nutrient transporter expression, and decreased inflammatory cytokines. Ursolic acid also increased the abundance of beneficial bacteria in the gut and suppressed antibiotic-induced resistance genes. These findings indicate the potential of ursolic acid as a novel substitute for antibiotics.
