Broad complex and wing development in cockroaches

Ana Fernandez-Nicolas et al.

Summary: This study investigates the role of the transcription factor Broad complex (Br-C) in wing growth and development in hemimetabolan insects. The results suggest that Br-C does not specifically contribute to the establishment of the wing field during early embryogenesis. However, Br-C seems to play a crucial role in the initiation of wing development later on, enhancing the expression of wing-related genes, particularly nub. This supports the hypothesis that Br-C has facilitated the evolution of holometaboly.

Chinmo is the larval member of the molecular trinity that directs Drosophila metamorphosis

James W. Truman et al.

Summary: This study reveals that the gene chinmo, related to Broad, plays a crucial role in repressing metamorphic genes during larval development. Removal of Chinmo results in premature expression of Broad and E93 in early larvae, causing a shift from larval to premetamorphic functions. The mutual inhibitory regulation between Chinmo, Broad, and E93, along with the interaction with regulatory hormones, likely ensures the orderly progression through insect metamorphosis.

How stage identity is established in insects: the role of the Metamorphic Gene Network

David Martin et al.

Summary: Proper formation of adult insects requires the integration of spatial and temporal regulatory axes. Temporal specificity is achieved through interactions between temporal identity genes controlled by developmental hormones. The Metamorphic Gene Network (MGN) comprises genes like Kr-h1, E93, and Br-C to specify life stage identity.

Tumor models in various Drosophila tissues

Shangyu Gong et al.

Summary: The development of cancer is a complex process that has been studied in depth using the Drosophila model organism. This research has provided insights into molecular mechanisms of tumor initiation and progression, as well as similarities and differences among tumor models in different tissues. The fly model has also been instrumental in understanding how disruptions in stem cell division and differentiation contribute to tumor formation, and in exploring tumor-host interactions and the role of the innate immune response in tumor growth.
