Super-Resolution Microscopy Opens New Doors to Life at the Nanoscale

Martin Fuhrmann et al.

Summary: Super-resolution fluorescence microscopy has great potential in neuroscience for visualizing nanoscale structures and biochemical activities. Recent technical progress has enhanced the performance and accessibility of this technology, but in vivo applications still face challenges. This review presents vivid examples based on STED and RESOLFT super-resolution microscopy, providing insights into the nanoscale mechanisms of cellular communication between neurons and glia.

Toxic and Phenotypic Effects of AAV_Cre Used to Transduce Mesencephalic Dopaminergic Neurons

Larissa Erben et al.

Summary: Microinjection of AAV_Cre in the ventral tegmental area can have neurotoxic effects on dopaminergic neurons and elicit behavioral abnormalities, which are independent of ErbB4 Cyt-1 recombination and also observed in wild-type controls. These non-specific effects can be prevented by reducing viral titers while maintaining sufficient recombination activity.

Sleep decreases neuronal activity control of microglial dynamics in mice

I Hristovska et al.

Summary: Sleep modulates microglial morphodynamics through Cx3cr1 signaling, and microglial contacts and morphodynamics are regulated by spontaneous and evoked neuronal activity. Microglia play an important role in synaptic homeostasis and plasticity.

Microglia sense neuronal activity via GABA in the early postnatal hippocampus

Francesca Logiacco et al.

Summary: Microglia in the central nervous system can sense synaptic activity, with glutamate uptake and GABA release from astrocytes triggering the activation of GABA receptors in microglia, potentially modulating microglial activity in developing neuronal networks.

Elevated expression of complement C4 in the mouse prefrontal cortex causes schizophrenia-associated phenotypes

Melanie Druart et al.

Summary: Accumulated evidence suggests that high expression variants of the C4 gene are associated with susceptibility to schizophrenia. Overexpression of C4 in the mouse prefrontal cortex leads to reduced spine density and glutamatergic input to pyramidal cells. These deficits may be attributed to decreased dendritic spine formation and hypofunction of NMDA receptors in juvenile C4-OE mice.

Anesthetics fragment hippocampal network activity, alter spine dynamics, and affect memory consolidation

Wei Yang et al.

Summary: Different types of general anesthetics have distinct effects on hippocampal network dynamics and synaptic connectivity, leading to impaired memory consolidation. This has implications for evaluating general anesthesia strategies in both animal research and clinical settings.
