Polygenic adaptation from standing genetic variation allows rapid ecotype formation

Nico Fuhrmann et al.

Summary: Genomic analysis confirms the recent establishment of different ecotypes in marine midges of the genus Clunio, which are characterized by variations in timing of adult emergence, oviposition behavior, and larval habitat. QTL mapping and genome screens reveal that polygenic adaptation from standing genetic variation, particularly involving circadian clock genes, sensory perception genes, and nervous system development genes, plays a central role in ecotype formation. These findings suggest that adaptive ecotype formation can occur rapidly through ongoing gene flow and the re-assortment of existing alleles.

Timing strains of the marine insect Clunio marinus diverged and persist with gene flow

Summary: Research shows that ecological divergence can occur in sympatry in the presence of gene flow, but this does not result in genome-wide genetic divergence.

Genetic variation for adaptive traits is associated with polymorphic inversions in Littorina saxatilis

Eva L. Koch et al.

Summary: Chromosomal inversions play a key role in local adaptation by preserving coadapted gene complexes and protecting them from gene flow. The marine snail Littorina saxatilis is an ideal study system to investigate the associations between genomic regions and traits under divergent selection. Some inversions influence multiple traits, suggesting they contain multiple loci involved in adaptation.

Circalunar clocks-Old experiments for a new era

Tobias S. Kaiser et al.

Summary: Circalunar clocks, allowing organisms to time reproduction to lunar phase, have been experimentally proven but are still not well understood at the molecular level. A new generation of researchers is using new tools to address this gap. Classic experiments on circalunar clocks highlight potential avenues for molecular research and suggest divergent mechanisms across different organisms.
