A task-general connectivity model reveals variation in convergence of cortical inputs to functional regions of the cerebellum

Evaluating brain parcellations using the distance-controlled boundary coefficient

Summary: One important approach to human brain mapping is to define distinct regions linked to unique functions. However, comparing different parcellations based on brain data is challenging. To address this issue, this study proposes a new unbiased criterion, the distance-controlled boundary coefficient (DCBC), to evaluate discrete parcellations. The DCBC is used to evaluate existing parcellations of the human neocortex and to predict functional boundaries. The results show that anatomical parcellations do not perform better than chance, while those based on resting-state fMRI data perform well. In addition, multi-modal parcellations combining functional and anatomical criteria perform worse than those based on functional data alone.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between neurovascular coupling (NVC) and neuronal activity (NA) using acute mouse cerebellar slices. The findings suggest that NVC involves a balance between the NMDAR-NO pathway and the mGluRs-20HETE pathway, with the latter playing a role at intermediate frequencies. This has important implications for interpreting fMRI signals.

Summary: Recent research has revealed new connections between cerebellar neurons, abundant inputs related to reward, a cellular solution for the temporal credit assignment problem, and has restructured theories of cerebellar learning. The discoveries challenge historical views of the cerebellum as a simple sensorimotor controller and highlight its involvement in cognitive functions. The diversity and dynamism of the cerebellum provide a roadmap for future research and define major new research directions.

Summary: DCNN-based encoding models accurately predict BOLD responses to natural scenes in the human visual system, but fail to explain a significant amount of variance in all visual brain areas. The unexplained variance is widely shared within and across visual brain areas, but not shared across different brains. The structured variance is not encoded in mean activity of source voxels or white matter voxels, and shows preferential connection to source voxels with adjacent receptive fields.

Homologous organization of cerebellar pathways to sensory, motor, and associative forebrain

Summary: The study used transsynaptic tracing techniques to quantify pathways between the cerebellum and forebrain, revealing the involvement of most thalamic nuclei and cortical regions in these pathways, especially associative areas. Homologous networks connecting single areas of the cerebellar cortex to diverse forebrain targets were identified, with shared cerebellar areas positioned to provide sensory-motor information to regions implicated in both movement and nonmotor function.
