A topological solution to object segmentation and tracking

Thomas Tsao et al.

Summary: This article discusses the segmentation and tracking of objects, proposing a surface representation method based on the mathematical structure of light rays. It shows that objects can be segmented and tracked without learning.

Orientation Preference Maps in Microcebus murinus Reveal Size-Invariant Design Principles in Primate Visual Cortex

Chun Lum Andy Ho et al.

Summary: Orientation preference maps are a prominent feature found in the primary visual cortex organization of many primates and carnivores, but not in rodents. By studying the V1 of the small prosimian mouse lemur, it was discovered that the organization of orientation columns in mouse lemurs is similar to that of macaques, indicating a possible size limitation on the primate-type visual cortical circuit organization.

Using deep neural networks to evaluate object vision tasks in rats

Kasper Vinken et al.

Summary: By comparing rodent behavioral and neural data with convolutional deep neural networks, the study found that performance in rodent object vision tasks can be captured using low to mid-level convolutional layers alone, without the need for higher layers known to simulate complex object recognition in primates. This challenges previous assumptions regarding the level of abstraction needed for rodent visual processing and suggests a new direction for further studies on the richness of representations underlying information processing in animal models.
