Synergistic use of UAV surveys, satellite tracking data, and mark-recapture to estimate abundance of elusive species

Holly J. Stokes et al.

Summary: Estimating the abundance of immature hawksbill and green turtles in a tidal lagoon of the Chagos Archipelago, the study used satellite tracking, UAV surveys, and capture-mark-recapture methods. The results showed a total of 339 turtles in the lagoon, with 91% being hawksbills and 9% being green turtles. These hawksbill densities are the highest reported among 17 foraging sites recorded worldwide, reflecting the successful long-term protection of turtles in the Chagos Archipelago.

Unoccupied aerial video (UAV) surveys as alternatives to BRUV surveys for monitoring elasmobranch species in coastal waters

Ashlie J. McIvor et al.

Summary: This study compared the suitability of UAV surveys and BRUV surveys for estimating elasmobranch abundance and diversity in the central Red Sea of Saudi Arabia. The results showed that UAV surveys had better spatial coverage and detected a greater number of species, while BRUV surveys were more sensitive in species detection. The study also provided the first insight into elasmobranchs associated with sandflat habitats and highlighted the importance of protecting these habitats.

Foraging ecology of green turtles (Chelonia mydas) in Peru: relationships with ontogeny and environmental variability

Javier Quinones et al.

Summary: Feeding strategies play a crucial role in sea turtle life history, but knowledge about foraging ecology is lacking for most turtle populations worldwide. This study examined green turtles in two different locations in Peru and found significant differences in life stages and diets between the two sites. The results suggest that juvenile turtles initially recruit to southern habitats, feeding on high-caloric animal matter, before transitioning to feed on lower-caloric, but abundant, vegetal matter as they grow. The findings provide valuable insights into the ontogenic-based developmental migrations of green turtles in the southeastern Pacific Ocean.

Spatial distribution of sea turtles on South Atlantic subtropical reefs

Juliana Mello-Fonseca et al.

Summary: Environmental conditions play a significant role in sea turtle population dynamics, affecting habitat use and density. This study in Arraial do Cabo, Brazil, showed that environmental variables and benthic composition influenced the distribution of green and hawksbill turtles, with green turtles more frequently sighted than hawksbill turtles, which were mainly found in warmer waters.

Identifying optimal wavelengths to maximise the detection rates of marine fauna from aerial surveys

Andrew P. Colefax et al.

Summary: Research on using drones and hyperspectral sensors to measure animal reflectance. Results show that a specific range of wavelengths plays an important role in enhancing the contrast between animals and their surroundings, especially in underwater environments. This approach may increase the accuracy of detecting submerged fauna.

Machine learning to detect marine animals in UAV imagery: effect of morphology, spacing, behaviour and habitat

Antoine M. Dujon et al.

Summary: Machine learning algorithms are increasingly used to process wildlife imagery data from UAVs, but the efficiency can be enhanced by developing suitable algorithms for monitoring multiple species. A low-cost computer was used here to train a convolutional neural network for distinguishing marine organisms and delineating sea turtle trajectories. The algorithm performed best when detecting individuals of similar body length, displaying consistent behavior, or occupying uniform habitat. Accuracy was impacted by factors such as morphology, behavior, spacing, and habitat complexity for different species.

Sequential overgrazing by green turtles causes archipelago-wide functional extinctions of seagrass meadows

Mayuresh Gangal et al.

Summary: After experiencing centuries of decline, green turtle populations have shown localized recoveries due to conservation efforts, but their herbivory on seagrass meadows has led to long-term impacts, potentially causing functional extinction of seagrass ecosystems.

High accuracy tracking reveals how small conservation areas can protect marine megafauna

Summary: The study in the Chagos Archipelago found that most turtles moved very little, with some staying continuously in the lagoon where they were equipped. However, a few turtles were observed to travel hundreds of kilometers from the tagging site.

The Drone Revolution of Shark Science: A Review

Paul A. Butcher et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the application of drones in wildlife management and research over the past decade, particularly focusing on their value and importance in shark research. Drones have helped to fill knowledge gaps about shark behavior and their significance in ecosystems, while also contributing to reducing dangerous encounters between sharks and humans. Additionally, the paper explores the future trends in drone technology for shark monitoring and research.
