Abundance modulates the ecosystem functional contributions of two sympatric Caribbean sea cucumbers

Rachel Munger et al.

Summary: This study compared the functional contributions of two common Caribbean sea cucumber species, Holothuria mexicana and Actynopyga agassizii, in terms of ammonium provisioning and sediment processing on coral reefs. The results showed that although H. mexicana had higher rates of ammonium excretion and sediment processing per individual, A. agassizii contributed more to sediment processing and ammonium excretion at the reef-wide level due to its higher abundance.

Rewriting results sections in the language of evidence

Stefanie Muff et al.

Summary: Despite criticism, the black-or-white null-hypothesis significance testing with an arbitrary P-value cutoff remains the standard way to report scientific findings. However, a lack of knowledge about suitable alternatives hampers progress. This study suggests using a language of evidence as a simpler and more intuitive alternative, which allows for a more nuanced approach in communicating scientific findings.

Ecological co-benefits from sea cucumber farming: Holothuria scabra increases growth rate of seagrass

Jessica Arnull et al.

Summary: A study in southwest Madagascar found that high density sea cucumber farming can significantly increase the leaf extension rate of the dominant seagrass species Thalassia hemprichii, but has no significant impact on another dominant seagrass species, Cymodocea serrulata. This suggests that sea cucumber farming may have important ecological co-benefits for seagrass habitats in the tropical Indo-Pacific region.
