Long-term atmospheric inorganic nitrogen deposition in West African savanna over 16 year period (Lamto, Cote d'Ivoire)

Money Ossohou et al.

Summary: The study presents a long-term trend analysis of atmospheric inorganic nitrogen deposition in Sub Saharan Africa from 2000 to 2015, showing decreasing trends in dry nitrogen deposition but increasing trends in wet nitrogen deposition, indicating changes in agricultural practices in the area.

Cadmium concentration and its typical input and output fluxes in agricultural soil downstream of a heavy metal sewage irrigation area

Yuhao Fu et al.

Summary: The study revealed that Cd in soil in sewage irrigation areas primarily comes from irrigation water and atmospheric deposition, with crop harvesting as the main output pathway. The annual mass balance of Cd in soil showed an accumulation state, indicating a continued increase in Cd concentration if the observed fluxes persist.

Dominant contribution of nitrogen compounds in precipitation chemistry in the Lake Victoria catchment (East Africa)

Adama Bakayoko et al.

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive chemical characterization of rainfall collected in Mbita, Kenya, on the shores of Lake Victoria. It analyzes the wet nitrogen deposition budget and identifies the main contributions to the chemical composition of precipitation, highlighting the impact on the unique natural resource represented by Lake Victoria and its catchment. The findings suggest the importance of monitoring nitrogen deposition to help improve nitrogen use efficiency in agricultural areas and reduce nitrogen losses around Lake Victoria.

Source contributions in precipitation chemistry and analysis of atmospheric nitrogen deposition in a Sahelian dry savanna site in West Africa

D. Laouali et al.

Summary: Experimental data on precipitation chemistry in a semi-arid savanna in Senegal indicated that the composition of precipitation was mainly influenced by marine and terrigenous sources, with nitrogen contributions from biogenic sources and livestock. Wet deposition fluxes played a significant role in direct nitrogen loading to savanna ecosystems in the Sahel.

African anthropogenic emissions inventory for gases and particles from 1990 to 2015

Sekou Keita et al.

Summary: This study developed an African regional anthropogenic emission inventory, showing an overall increasing trend in pollutant emissions in Africa from 1990 to 2015. Western Africa has been identified as the highest emitting region for black carbon, organic carbon, carbon monoxide, and non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOCs), while Southern Africa and Northern Africa are the main emitters of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides. Emissions from this inventory are compared to other regional and global inventories, and mitigation scenarios should focus on key pollutant emission sectors highlighted in the study.

Source Apportionment of Urban Ammonia and its Contribution to Secondary Particle Formation in a Mid-size European City

Laura Ehrnsperger et al.

Summary: The study highlights the temporal dynamics of urban NH3 concentrations in Munster, with agriculture and road traffic being main sources of NH3 contributing to the formation of secondary particles. The high NH3 levels in the city are mainly attributed to agricultural emissions, while road traffic also plays a significant role in NH3 concentration.
