Hypes, hopes, and the way forward for microalgal biotechnology

Maria J. Barbosa et al.

Summary: The urge for food security and sustainability has driven the development of microalgal biotechnology. Microalgae, as microorganisms, have the potential to be a valuable resource for food, feed, energy, and chemicals. With faster growth and higher productivity than plant crops, microalgae have the advantage of not requiring agricultural land and having efficient fertilizer uptake. They are also seen as a replacement for soy protein, fish oil, and palm oil, and can be utilized in industrial biotechnology for various purposes.

Genomic analysis of an ultrasmall freshwater green alga, Medakamo hakoo

Shoichi Kato et al.

Summary: Multi-omic and evolutionary analyses of the ultrasmall green alga, Medakomo hakoo, suggest it belongs to a new genus within the class Trebouxiophyceae and provide insight into essential genes for microalgae. With a genome size of 15.8 Mbp and 7629 genes, it is among the smallest genomes in the Viridiplantae. Comparative analyses reveal shared gene sets among 15 ultrasmall algae, enabling identification of essential genes for metabolism and cellular functions.

Starch-Rich Microalgae as an Active Ingredient in Beer Brewing

Giorgia Carnovale et al.

Summary: Microalgal biomass, cultivated under nitrogen deprivation to produce 50% starch-containing Tetraselmis chui, was explored as an active ingredient in beer brewing through small-scale trials. Successfully integrated into the brewing process, T. chui enriched beer with microalgae, resulting in a product with distinct sensory properties.

Exogenous Abscisic Acid Confers Salinity Tolerance in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii During Its Life Cycle

Said Abu-Ghosh et al.

Summary: The study found that abscisic acid can promote the growth and photosynthesis of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, increase its tolerance to high-salinity stress, reduce the generation of reactive oxygen species, and prevent cell formation of palmella under high salt conditions.

Protein Enrichment of Wheat Bread with Microalgae: Microchloropsis gaditana, Tetraselmis chui and Chlorella vulgaris

Waqas Muhammad Qazi et al.

Summary: In this study, disrupted and dried microalgae were used to enrich wheat bread protein, with Microchloropsis gaditana showing the greatest potential for protein fortification. The incorporation of microalgae improved protein quality in bread but reduced dough strength and bread volume, requiring ethanol treatment to enhance taste and color.

Algal proteins: Production strategies and nutritional and functional properties

Pedro Geada et al.

Summary: Animal-based proteins have high demand globally but are unsustainable due to efficiency and environmental concerns. Algal biomass, with advantages like fast growth, low water usage, and carbon-neutral emissions, is seen as a sustainable alternative source. Research on algae proteins is advancing rapidly, with great potential applications and challenges ahead.

Effect of high pressure homogenization on microstructural and rheological properties of A. platensis, Isochrysis, Nannochloropsis and Tetraselmis species

Johannes Magpusao et al.

Summary: High pressure homogenization (HPH) has different effects on microalgal suspensions, with A. platensis, Isochrysis sp., and Tetraselmis sp. being more sensitive to HPH treatment while Nannochloropsis sp. is relatively insensitive. The colloidal properties of microalgal suspensions are influenced by the proportion of various nutrients, affecting hydrophilic/hydrophobic interactions between macromolecules.

Tetraselmis jejuensis sp. nov. (Chlorodendrophyceae), a Euryhaline Microalga Found in Supralittoral Tide Pools at Jeju Island, Korea

Jun-Ho Hyung et al.

Summary: A new euryhaline microalga, Tetraselmis jejuensis, adapted to supralittoral tide pools with unique morphological and chloroplast characteristics, was discovered. The SSU rDNA sequences of the isolated strains showed a distinct phylogenetic position within the Tetraselmis genus, suggesting the need for a new species classification.
