Overview on stress-induced strategies for enhanced microalgae lipid production: Application, mechanisms and challenges

Xueting Song et al.

Summary: This article reviews the recent progress in stress-induced strategies for lipid accumulation in microalgae. Different stress-induced strategies to improve lipid production are discussed, with a focus on the use of phytohormone combined with abiotic stress under two-stage culture conditions. The possible mechanisms of using phytohormone and abiotic stress to enhance lipid biosynthesis are also discussed.

Phytohormone supplementation significantly increases fatty acid content ofPhaeodactylum tricornutumin two-phase culture

Huiying Zhang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that a two-phase culture combining 2,4-D and ABA enhances biomass and lipid accumulation in Phaeodactylum tricornutum. This approach results in significant improvements in growth and lipid production compared to single hormone treatments. Gene transcriptional levels indicate an acceleration of fatty acid synthesis in the presence of both hormones, offering a promising strategy for biodiesel production from marine microalgae.

Regulatory effect of gibberellic acid (GA3) on the biomass productivity and some metabolites of a marine microalga,Isochrysis galbana

Nasim Sadat Hosseini Madani et al.

Summary: The study found that the growth and biosynthesis of most metabolites in Isochrysis galbana were effectively improved with GA3 at 4 mg L-1. The production of chlorophyll a increased with increasing GA3 concentration, while the lipid content significantly increased in microalgae treated with different GA3 concentrations.

Summary: Microalgae are a diverse group of organisms capable of accumulating bioactive metabolites, making them ideal for applications in various sectors. Extracts from two marine microalgae strains showed increasing antioxidant activity during different growth stages, highlighting their potential for biomass valorization and cultivation upscaling. These strains also contained high levels of the xanthophyll fucoxanthin and showed no cytotoxicity towards mouse cell lines, suggesting their suitability for commercial exploitation.

Pigment and Fatty Acid Production under Different Light Qualities in the Diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum

Bernardo Duarte et al.

Summary: Different wavelengths of LED illumination can modulate the production of carotenoids and fatty acids in diatoms, with red light promoting the production of Hexadecatrienoic acid (HTA) and Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), while blue light favors the production of saturated TAGs. Diatoms can use spectral light control to regulate the production of value-added molecules, demonstrating potential applications in aquaculture feeding and the food or biofuel industries.
