Emulation of deep-ultraviolet lithography using rapid-prototyping, electron-beam lithography for silicon photonics design

Mustafa Hammood et al.

Summary: We present a method to simulate the optical performance of silicon photonic devices fabricated using advanced DUV processes. The method utilizes a computational lithography predictive model generated from SEM image data. Experimental results demonstrate the accuracy of the emulation method on silicon Bragg grating waveguides and grating-based add-drop filter devices, which are vulnerable to DUV lithography effects. This emulation method enables designers to observe the impact of DUV lithography on device performance in a low-cost, rapid-prototyping electron-beam lithography process.

Integrated Gallium Nitride Nonlinear Photonics

Yanzhen Zheng et al.

Summary: This paper reports GaNOI microresonators with intrinsic quality factors over 2.5 million, corresponding to an optical loss of 0.17 dB cm(-1). It demonstrates a parametric oscillation threshold power as low as 6.2 mW and estimates the experimentally extracted nonlinear index of GaN at telecom wavelengths to be n(2) = 1.4 x 10(-18) m(2) W-1, which is several times larger than that of commonly used platforms such as Si3N4, LiNbO3, and AlN. The large intrinsic nonlinear refractive index, together with its broadband transparency window and high refractive index contrast, make GaNOI a promising platform for chip-scale nonlinear applications.

Nonlinear optics in gallium phosphide cavities: simultaneous second and third harmonic generation

Blaine McLaughlin et al.

Summary: We demonstrate the simultaneous generation of second and third harmonic signals from a telecom wavelength pump in a gallium phosphide (GaP) microdisk. Using power scaling analysis and calculations of nonlinear cavity mode coupling factors, we investigate the contributions of direct and cascaded sum frequency generation processes to the third harmonic signal. We find that despite the high material absorption in GaP at the third harmonic wavelength, both of these processes can be significant and their relative magnitudes depend closely on the detuning between the second harmonic wavelengths of the cavity modes.

Xiyuan Lu et al.

Summary: The research demonstrates efficient second-harmonic generation in silicon photonics through a combination of effective chi((2)) nonlinearity, resonant enhancement, and perfect phase matching. The breakthrough shows significantly higher conversion efficiency and output power than previous works, paving the way for further integration of self-referenced frequency combs and optical frequency references in the field.
