Guided-mode resonance sensors with ultrahigh bulk sensitivity and figure of merit assisted by a metallic layer and structural symmetry- breaking

Linyong Qian et al.

Summary: We propose a refractive index sensor that achieves both high bulk sensitivity and figure of merit (FOM) through the guided-mode resonance (GMR) effect. This is achieved by using a metallic layer and breaking the structural symmetry in the grating layer. The presence of the metallic layer allows for the reflection of the electric field to the sensing environment, leading to enhanced bulk sensitivity. Additionally, increasing the asymmetry of the grating reduces the full width at half maximum of the GMR mode, resulting in a high FOM. The sensor achieves a bulk refractive index sensitivity of 1076.7 nm/RIU and an FOM up to 35889 RIU-1 simultaneously. The optimization of other structural parameters is also discussed. This GMR sensor with high bulk sensitivity and FOM has potential applications in sensing with stringent requirements.

Summary: This study introduces a new family of 2D chiral lattices constructed from fully achiral unit cells, which differs fundamentally from previously reported arrays made of chiral unit cells. The control of CD peaks can be achieved by tuning the geometry and matrix refractive indices in certain configurations.

Active spatial control of photothermal heating and thermo-actuated convective flow by engineering a plasmonic metasurface with heterodimer lattices

Zhimin Jing et al.

Summary: Thermo-plasmonics, which uses plasmonic structures as heat sources, has been widely applied in biomedical and microfluidic applications. However, a metasurface with single-element unit cells has limited control over the induced hydrodynamic effects. In contrast, plasmonic metasurfaces with metal disk heterodimer lattices have two heat sources within a unit cell, allowing for active control of thermal distributions and fluid dynamics at the nanoscale by shifting the excitation wavelength.

Enhanced sensitivity of an all-dielectric refractive index sensor with an optical bound state in the continuum

Dmitrii N. Maksimov et al.

Summary: This study investigates the sensitivity of a refractive index sensor using an optical bound state in the continuum. A method for optimizing the design of the sensor is proposed to achieve the upper sensitivity limit, regardless of the constituent dielectric's permittivity. The results are validated through numerical simulations.

Plasmonic hot-electron photodetection with quasi-bound states in the continuum and guided resonances

Wenhao Wang et al.

Summary: We propose a novel Ag grating/TiO2 cladding hybrid structure for hot electron photodetection (HEPD), which combines quasi-bound states in the continuum (BIC) and plasmonic hot electrons to achieve perfect absorption and multiband HEPD. By combining quasi-BIC and guided resonance, our structure enables more efficient light harvesting compared to traditional gold plasmonics.

Summary: Plasmonic nanoheaters can produce significant local heating when excited by a specific laser wavelength, with even more sensitivity achieved by coating them with a thick layer of doped polymer. Modulation of excitation allows fine control of the thermal response, making them useful for applications in nano medicine and nano chemistry.
