Hydrogen Production from Formaldehyde and Paraformaldehyde in Water under Additive-Free Conditions: Catalytic Reactions and Mechanistic Insights

Soumyadip Patra et al.

Summary: Efficient catalytic systems based on arene-Ru(II) complexes with bis-imidazole methane-based ligands were developed for additive-free hydrogen generation from formaldehyde and paraformaldehyde in water. The presence of bis-imidazole methane ligands significantly affected the catalytic performance of the studied catalysts. Among the screened complexes, a complex with the ligand [(eta(6)-p-cymene)RuCl(L)]Cl-+(-) ([Ru]-2) showed the highest turnover number (>20,000) for hydrogen gas generation from paraformaldehyde in water.

Manganese-Catalyzed Reformation of Vicinal Glycols toα-HydroxyCarboxylic Acids with the Liberation of Hydrogen Gas

Satyadeep Waiba et al.

Summary: In this study, a sustainable catalytic pathway was developed to convert readily available feedstocks into valuable α-hydroxycarboxylic acid molecules. A bench stable metal complex was used as the catalyst, enabling the selective transformation of vicinal glycols into α-hydroxycarboxylic acids at low temperature. The protocol showed high efficiency and applicability for various types of vicinal glycols, with significant potential in the synthesis of bioactive molecules and biodegradable polymers.

Bis-Imidazole Methane Ligated Ruthenium(II) Complexes: Synthesis, Characterization, and Catalytic Activity for Hydrogen Production from Formic Acid in Water

Soumyadip Patra et al.

Summary: A series of half sandwich arene-ruthenium complexes containing bis-imidazole methane-based ligands were synthesized and tested for hydrogen production from formic acid in aqueous medium. Among the complexes investigated, Ru(II) coordinated with a 4-methoxyphenyl substituted bis-imidazole methane ligand exhibited the highest catalytic turnover and efficiency for formic acid dehydrogenation in water.
