In-Depth Analysis of Key Factors Affecting the Catalysis of Oxidized Carbon Blacks for Cellulose Hydrolysis

Atsushi Gabe et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that oxidized carbon blacks can serve as efficient catalysts for the hydrolysis of cellulose, with two types of acidic oxygen-containing functional groups (carboxyl groups and phenol groups) on the external surface exhibiting almost equal catalytic activity towards cellulose molecules.

Production of oxygen-containing fuels via supercritical methanol hydrodeoxygenation of lignin bio-oil over Cu/CuZnAlOx catalyst

Xiangchen Kong et al.

Summary: This study presents a practical and economical method for upgrading lignin bio-oil by supercritical methanol hydrodeoxygenation (SCM-HDO) using a Cu/CuZnAlO(x) catalyst. The selective production of oxygen-containing fuel was achieved through the hydrogenation of aromatic rings and inhibition of over-deoxygenation reactions. The catalyst activity could be easily recovered through a calcination-reduction process, offering potential opportunities for the production of alternative biofuels from lignin bio-oil.

Catalytic waste Kraft lignin hydrodeoxygenation to liquid fuels over a hollow Ni-Fe catalyst

Xiaomeng Dou et al.

Summary: The depolymerization and demethoxylation of Kraft lignin (KL) was achieved using a novel H-NiFe2O4 catalyst under mild conditions, with high liquid product yield and minimal coke yield. The catalytic performance of H-NiFe2O4 benefits from the synergy of Ni and Fe, promoting lignin depolymerization while suppressing condensation reactions. Plausible reaction pathways of KL depolymerization over H-NiFe2O4 are discussed, demonstrating the potential of this catalytic system for efficient conversion of KL into liquid fuels.
