Evaluation of 1,3-dioxolane in promoting CO2 hydrate kinetics and its significance in hydrate-based CO2 sequestration

Yuanxin Yao et al.

Summary: Novel CCUS solutions are required to reduce anthropogenic CO2 emissions for climate change mitigation. Hydrate-based CO2 sequestration (HCS) is a carbon-neutrality technology that stores CO2 in solid hydrate form. However, there are challenges in HCS application, such as demanding thermodynamic conditions, slow formation kinetics, and low CO2 gas uptake. This study examined 1,3-dioxolane (DIOX) as a potential CO2 hydrate promoter and found that it has dual-function promotion effects, but its effectiveness is weakened at certain concentrations and high pressure. The study provides a comprehensive evaluation of DIOX as a possible promoter for CO2 hydrate in HCS application.

Insights from molecular dynamics on CO2 diffusion coefficient in saline water over a wide range of temperatures, pressures, and salinity: CO2 geological storage implications

Sina Omrani et al.

Summary: This research utilized Molecular Dynamics simulation to calculate the CO2 diffusion coefficient under various NaCl saline water concentrations, temperatures, and pressures. Higher NaCl concentrations were found to lead to a decrease in CO2 diffusion coefficient, and a new precise correlation was proposed for estimation. The presence of other salts such as CaCl2 and KCl had varying effects on the CO2 diffusion coefficient, with CaCl2 having the highest impact and KCl having the lowest.

Comparison of SDS and L-Methionine in promoting CO2 hydrate kinetics: Implication for hydrate-based CO2 storage

Xuejian Liu et al.

Summary: The continuously increasing CO2 emissions since industrialization has sparked widespread concerns on environmental and climate change issues. This study compared the effect of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and L-methionine ((L)-Met) on CO2 hydrate formation kinetics, and found that (L)-Met is a more effective and eco-friendly kinetic promoter than SDS. The experimental results and hydrate morphology observations provided possible explanations for the observed kinetics. A novel calculation method was developed to quantify the partition of CO2 in different phases. The reusability of (L)-Met as a CO2 hydrate kinetic promoter was also demonstrated. This study highlights the importance of finding efficient and eco-friendly technologies for CO2 sequestration.

Intensified Carbon Dioxide Hydrate Formation Kinetics in a Simulated Subsea Sediment: Application in Carbon Capture and Sequestration

Rupali Gautam et al.

Summary: To achieve the targets of net zero carbon emissions set by the United Nations Climate Change Conference, hydrate-based carbon dioxide capture and sequestration (CCS) is a potential sustainable technology. However, the slow kinetics of CO2 hydrate formation in the saline subsea environment and the non-eco-friendly nature of existing additives pose major challenges. This study evaluated the performance of biocompatible hydrophobic amino acid L-leucine for CO2 hydrate formation/dissociation using simulated subsea sediment. The results showed that L-leucine can intensify the kinetics and improve the rate of CO2 uptake.

Hydrate based carbon capture and sequestration (HBCCS): An innovative approach towards decarbonization

Gaurav Pandey et al.

Summary: The increase in global greenhouse gas emissions has introduced climate change as a significant problem, necessitating a paradigm shift towards sustainable energy sources. Carbon capture and sequestration technologies have the potential to reduce anthropogenic CO2 emissions, but are economically unfeasible. Hydrate-based CO2 capture and sequestration, particularly the methane-carbon dioxide sweeping process, shows promise in providing long-term CO2 sequestration and clean energy generation.

CO2 hydrate properties and applications: A state of the art

Saeid Sinehbaghizadeh et al.

Summary: Global warming, caused by anthropogenic CO2 emissions, has become a pressing environmental concern. Natural gas hydrate reservoirs have emerged as a potential source of energy and a possible solution for CO2 sequestration. CO2 hydrates, as safe and non-flammable compounds, can be used in industrial processes if their approaches can be improved. Laboratory experiments, process modelling, and molecular dynamics simulations can aid in understanding the properties and mechanisms of CO2 hydrates. This review focuses on the sequestration of CO2, process flow diagrams, the effects of hydrate promoters and porous media, and the fundamental properties of CO2 hydrates at the molecular level.

Experimental Study on Hydrate Structure Transition Using an In Situ High-Pressure Powder X-ray Diffractometer: Application in CO2 Capture

Asheesh Kumar et al.

Summary: Gas hydrates, such as sH and sI hydrates, have potential for gas separation applications, with sH hydrates requiring large molecules and help-gas molecules to form stable structures. Testing different compositions showed that CO2 lean mixtures form sH hydrates, while CO2-rich mixtures form sI hydrates, indicating a structure transition pattern across gas mixtures. Furthermore, it was observed that the CO2 lean mixture initially forms sI hydrate and gradually converts to the thermodynamically stable sH hydrate, providing insights into a suitable gas separation mechanism for this gas mixture.

Influence of THF and THF/SDS on the Kinetics of CO2 Hydrate Formation Under Stirring

Hongliang Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that THF significantly shortens the induction time of CO2 hydrates, but reduces gas absorption and hydrate formation rate due to occupying a large cavity in the structure, while SDS increases gas storage density and hydrate formation rate without affecting the induction time. Using both THF and SDS together improves hydrate formation efficiency, maximizing both formation rate and total gas uptake.
