A MOF-on-MOF strategy to construct double Z-scheme heterojunction for high-performance photocatalytic degradation

Hassan Sepehrmansourie et al.

Summary: In this study, a double Z-scheme heterojunction material UiO-66/NH2-MIL-125/g-C3N4 was developed for the degradation of OFL antibiotics under visible light irradiation. The material exhibited high photocatalytic activity and a significantly higher degradation rate constant compared to pristine UiO-66/MIL-125. Radical trapping and EPR experiments confirmed the essential role of (OH)-O-center dot and O-center dot(2)- in OFL photodegradation. This research not only provides a novel approach to construct MOF on other MOFs but also offers a new method for removing emerging pollutants from wastewater.

Summary: Pollutants from industry and chemical laboratories have harmful effects on human health and the environment, leading to the development of more versatile and sustainable protocols based on green chemistry principles. One innovative approach is to carry out reactions under visible-light sources without photocatalysts, offering a benign, simple, and cost-effective alternative that could change harsh reaction conditions into milder ones. Mechanisms based on the generation of an electron donor-acceptor complex and a single-electron transfer pathway were discussed to further encourage researchers in this promising field.
