Activation-induced layered structure in NiCoAl by atomic modulation for energy storage application

T. A. Kumaravelu et al.

Summary: In this study, Ni ion-substituted CoAl alloys were activated by KOH electrolyte, leading to the formation of self-supported layered double hydroxides (LDHs) and the modulation of atomic structures. Raman depth mapping revealed that the formation of layered structures CoOOH and Co(OH)2 was attributed to the octahedral and tetrahedral symmetry sites of CoO and Co3O4, respectively. The activated Ni10Co85Al5 exhibited superior volumetric capacitance, cyclic stability, and generated a voltage of 0.54 V in a fabricated super-capacitor cell. This work provides an easy route for advanced LDHs development and clarifies the mechanism of electrochemical charge storage in them.

Unraveling the dual defect sites in graphite carbon nitride for ultra-high photocatalytic H2O2 evolution

Xu Zhang et al.

Summary: Defect engineering modified graphite carbon nitride (g-C3N4) with dual defect sites, -C N groups and N vacancies, has been found to significantly enhance the photocatalytic production of H2O2. The dual defect sites form an electron-rich structure and lead to a more localized charge density distribution, which improves light absorption, carrier separation, selectivity, and activity of H2O2 generation. The N vacancies effectively adsorb and activate O-2, while the -C N groups facilitate the adsorption of H+, synergistically promoting H2O2 generation. The modified g-C3N4 achieved a high H2O2 generation rate and apparent quantum efficiency, surpassing previously reported g-C3N4-based photocatalysts.

Creation of carbon defects and in-plane holes with the assistance of NH4Br to enhance the photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4

Guiyang Yu et al.

Summary: Microstructure modulation is an effective strategy to enhance the photocatalytic efficiency of g-C3N4, and in this study, a novel NH4Br-assisted programmed heating method was used to successfully create abundant carbon defects and holes in the material. This resulted in g-C3N4 nanosheets with increased surface area and exposed catalytically active sites, leading to improved photocatalytic performance. The synthetic strategy developed in this study is simple and convenient, suggesting potential for designing other efficient photocatalysts.
