A multifunctional adsorbent based on 2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid/dopamine-modified magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles for the removal of heavy-metal ions

Ting Lei et al.

Summary: The overexploitation of nature has led to the serious problem of heavy-metal water pollution, and it is crucial to develop or improve water treatment technology for heavy-metal wastewater. In this study, functionalized Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles (FDDMs) were prepared and showed excellent adsorption capacity and selectivity for Pb2+, Cu2+, and Cd2+ ions in both actual wastewater and simulated water samples. The adsorbent also demonstrated good regeneration performance. Therefore, FDDMs are a promising adsorbent for the treatment of heavy-metal wastewater.

Emerging insights into the use of carbon-based nanomaterials for the electrochemical detection of heavy metal ions

Chikkili Venkateswara Raju et al.

Summary: A number of water bodies worldwide are contaminated by toxic chemicals, particularly heavy metal ions, which pose a major risk to human health. To address this issue, robust and selective electrochemical sensing technologies using carbon nanomaterials have been developed. This review summarizes recent advances in the design and development of carbon-based nanomaterials for the efficient electrochemical detection of heavy metal ions, discussing the immobilization methods, sensing mechanisms, modifications, advantages, and disadvantages of these materials. The review also highlights the role of carbon-based electrode materials in on-site detection and addresses potential challenges and future prospects.

Ultrasensitive determination of mercury by ICP-OES coupled with a vapor generation approach based on solution cathode glow discharge

Zhaoqing Cai et al.

Summary: In this study, a sample introduction technique based on SCGD of a portable design for ICP-OES was proposed for sensitive determination of mercury. The method achieved a detection limit of 0.22 μg/L, which was significantly lower than traditional pneumatic nebulization. The accuracy and practicality of the method were demonstrated through the analysis of various samples.

Simultaneous measurements of Cr, Cd, Hg and Pb species in ng L-1 levels by interfacing high performance liquid chromatography and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry

Yihuan Song et al.

Summary: In this study, an analytical method integrating online solid phase extraction with high-performance liquid chromatography and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was developed to simultaneously preconcentrate and quantify forms of Cr, Cd, Hg, and Pb in water. The method showed low limits of detection, good linearities, and low variability, and was validated by analyzing reference materials and real water samples.

Global Hg cycle over Ediacaran-Cambrian transition and its implications for environmental and biological evolution

Yaowen Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the co-evolution of environment and complex life during the Ediacaran-Cambrian transition through the analysis of mercury (Hg) abundance and isotopes in sediments from South China and the Indian craton. The results suggest that volcanism played a significant role in the extinction of Ediacaran biota and global negative carbon excursions, and the burial of organic matter in the oceans during the early Cambrian led to an increase in Earth's oxygen levels and the appearance of more complex large-body animals.

Human risk assessment of toxic elements (As, Cd, Hg, Pb) in marine fish from the Amazon

Juliana De Souza-Araujo et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the burden of As, Hg, Pb, and Cd in 314 marine fishes from the Amazon Coast. The results showed higher Hg concentrations in reef-associated fish compared to demersal fish. The study also found correlations between As, Pb, and Cd, suggesting similar dispersion properties and bioaccumulation homology. The concentrations of As exceeded guidelines and legal limits in a majority of the examined species, while Cd, Hg, and Pb levels were generally low. The estimated daily intake of iAs, Hg, and Pb were found to pose potential non-carcinogenic health risks.
