The Revised Curve Number Rainfall-Runoff Methodology for an Improved Runoff Prediction

Kenneth Kai Fong Lee et al.

Summary: The Curve Number (CN) rainfall-runoff model, which was developed by the USDA and SCS in 1954, is widely used for estimating rainfall and runoff. However, its accuracy in predicting runoff has been globally questioned due to incomplete data and documentation about its development. This study reevaluated the CN model using data from Malaysia, China, and Greece, and found that it can be improved by using a power correlation. The results showed high model efficiency indexes and ratios that are consistent with worldwide reports.

Formulation of Parsimonious Urban Flash Flood Predictive Model with Inferential Statistics

Lloyd Ling et al.

Summary: The curve number (CN) rainfall-runoff model has been found to have limitations in consistently predicting runoff results. This study presents a calibrated model that is statistically significant and does not rely on return period data. The research also highlights the importance of not solely relying on land-use and land cover when selecting CN values.

Compound Hydrometeorological Extremes: Drivers, Mechanisms and Methods

Wei Zhang et al.

Summary: This article reviews current advances in understanding compound hydrometeorological extremes, focusing on various types of compound extremes and their driving factors, such as hot-dry, hot-wet, cold-wet, cold-dry, and compound flooding. It also discusses the methods used to study these extremes.

Statistical and Type II Error Assessment of a Runoff Predictive Model in Peninsula Malaysia

Lloyd Ling et al.

Summary: This article reassesses the effectiveness of the SCS Curve Number (CN0.2) runoff model and performs model calibration using inferential statistics. Results show that the uncalibrated SCS model underestimates runoff amounts for rainfall depths less than 70 mm, while overpredicting in larger storm events. The study highlights the importance of validating the SCS model with rainfall-runoff datasets before its application for runoff prediction.
