Groundwater recharge estimation using in-situ and GRACE observations in the eastern region of the United Arab Emirates

Khaled Alghafli et al.

Summary: The intensive agricultural expansion and rapid urban development have led to a decline in groundwater levels in Abu Dhabi Emirate, UAE. The study compared GRACE satellite measurements with in-situ monitoring wells and found satisfactory agreements between the two methods. The proposed approach can be applied to estimate groundwater recharge in other arid regions with limited in-situ monitoring wells.

Assessing the costs of Managed Aquifer Recharge options to support agricultural development

Joanne Vanderzalm et al.

Summary: Managed aquifer recharge (MAR) is important in agricultural water management and can facilitate conjunctive use of surface and groundwater. The type, scale, and experience of MAR schemes, as well as the costs associated with approvals and monitoring, are key factors influencing the costs. MAR is well-suited for areas of low relief and mosaic irrigation.

Aquifer storage of treated wastewater for subsequent recovery as an important strategy for sustainable water security in Kuwait

Afnan S. Al-Huwaishel et al.

Summary: This research explores the possibility of creating an underground water reservoir by injecting treated wastewater and evaluates different injection/recovery scenarios. Results show that an injection rate of 650 m(3)/d followed by a recovery rate of 1,000 m(3)/d is the optimal option for good recovery efficiency and acceptable water quality.

Enhancement of Groundwater Recharge from Wadi Al Bih Dam, UAE

Ahmed Sefelnasr et al.

Summary: Groundwater and harvested rainwater are the main freshwater resources in the UAE, with the groundwater resources in Wadi Al Bih being relatively sustainable. However, the lack of direct recharge techniques leads to a significant loss of rainwater through evaporation and percolation. The study shows that groundwater resources are decreasing at a rate of approximately 35 million cubic meters per year, and climate variables have a significant impact on groundwater recharge. Mitigation measures include revising withdrawal rates and implementing different recharge techniques.

Groundwater availability and water demand sustainability over the upper mega aquifers of Arabian Peninsula and west region of Iraq

Salih Muhammad Awadh et al.

Summary: The research focuses on the past, present, and future status of groundwater characteristics in the Arabian Peninsula and west region of Iraq, emphasizing the scarcity of groundwater resources in major oil-producing countries globally. The inevitability of desalination of seawater as a major water source is highlighted, as well as the importance of efficiently protecting and utilizing groundwater resources in these developing countries.

Spatial and Temporal Changes of Groundwater Storage in the Quaternary Aquifer, UAE

Mohsen Sherif et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the temporal and spatial variations of groundwater in the Quaternary aquifer in UAE, revealing a significant decrease in freshwater resources and increase in brackish water. Continuing the current groundwater exploitation could deplete freshwater resources in agricultural areas, necessitating more focus on the management of brackish water resources.

Microorganisms and their metabolic activities affect seepage through porous media in groundwater artificial recharge systems: A review

Yuesuo Yang et al.

Summary: Groundwater artificial recharge is widely utilized to solve groundwater overdraft issues, with the activity of microorganisms having complex effects on the recharge process, including the formation of bioclogging and impact on seepage. This review discusses the major factors influencing microbial clogging in the recharge process, and addresses the activities of microorganisms in different seepage conditions as well as the role of microbial EPSs in the recharging process.
