Understanding the membrane fouling control process at molecular level in the heated persulfate activation- membrane distillation hybrid system

Mingmei Ding et al.

Summary: Heat-activated PS activation pretreatment effectively degrades DOM and changes its molecular conformation, leading to reduced membrane fouling in the MD process for treating WWTP secondary effluent and surface water. Higher MW and unsaturated refractory organics are more prone to be destroyed and partially mineralized during the pretreatment process. Oxygen-deficient compounds with higher DBE values tend to deposit on the membrane surface and cause fouling, while the reduction of DOM concentration and transformation of molecular structure help reduce membrane fouling.

Reaction heterogeneity in the bridging effect of divalent cations on polysaccharide fouling

Shujuan Meng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the bridging effect of divalent cations (Ca2+ and Mg2+) on polysaccharide fouling. Results showed that Ca2+ alleviated alginate fouling at high concentrations, while Mg2+ worsened membrane fouling caused by alginate compared to Ca2+ at all ion concentrations.

A Review of Treatment Techniques for Short-Chain Perfluoroalkyl Substances

Yang Liu et al.

Summary: Short-chain PFASs are persistent chemicals that pose potential threats to human health and are widely polluted in water bodies. This study systematically summarized low carbon treatment techniques for short-chain PFASs, including adsorption and advanced oxidation. The results showed that adsorption was the most widely used and effective method, although the regeneration of the adsorbent was undesirable. Advanced oxidation techniques could degrade short-chain PFASs with low energy consumption but unsatisfied mineralization rates. Therefore, it is urgent to enhance and upgrade water treatment techniques for the effective treatment of PFASs pollution in water bodies.

Mechanistic insights into the removal of PFOA by 2D MXene/CNT membrane with the influence of Ca2+ and humic acid

Hang Xu et al.

Summary: A two-dimensional MXene/CNT membrane with excellent water permeation and PFOA rejection performance was fabricated and evaluated. The fouling mechanism of PFOA coexistence with Ca2+ and humic acid on the membrane was investigated using experiments and density functional theory (DFT). Results revealed the dominant role of hydrogen bonding interaction at the initial stage and the strengthening of complexation interaction with the increase of Ca2+ concentrations, which contributed to higher permeability.

MXene (Ti3T2CX)-reinforced thin-film polyamide nanofiltration membrane for short-chain perfluorinated compounds removal

Jun Ma et al.

Summary: Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a class of 'forever chemicals' that pose global concerns due to their high chemical stability in humans and water resources. This study proposes a MXene-reinforced interfacial polymerization technique to create polyamide (PA) membranes with high rejection for short-chain PFAS. The use of MXene enhances the hydrophilicity of the membranes without compromising rejection, resulting in increased PFAS rejection and permeance. This research demonstrates the potential of MXene-regulated interfacial polymerization techniques for tailoring PA nanofiltration membranes and addressing the trade-off between selectivity and permeability.

Transparent exopolymer particles-associated membrane fouling analyses of systems containing sodium alginate, calcium, iron, alum and their combination during dead-end ultrafiltration

Li Lin et al.

Summary: This work examines the effects of different metal cations (Ca2+, Fe3+, and Al3+) on fouling by sodium alginate through a series of filtration experiments. The presence of these cations induces biphasic filtration behavior, initially aggravating fouling but then mitigating it. The study also demonstrates the relationship between cation types, transparent exopolymer particle formations, and fouling layer structures. These findings have practical implications for the hydraulic performance of low-pressure membranes in water treatment.

Hyaluronic acid-modified nanofiltration membrane for ultrahigh water permeance and efficient rejection of PFASs

Mingxiang Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel thin-film composite (TFC) nanofiltration membrane was successfully fabricated by introducing a hyaluronic acid (HA) interlayer. The obtained membrane showed a more negative surface, reduced thickness, crumpled structure, and higher degree of cross-linking, leading to excellent water permeance and high rejection for specific contaminants. This research proposes a new, green strategy for fabricating TFC NF membranes for environmental water treatment that could potentially be applied in industrial settings.

Removal mechanisms of perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) by nanofiltration: Roles of membrane-contaminant interactions

Mu Li et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the roles of typical PFCs-membrane interactions in membrane adsorption and rejection, finding that electrostatic repulsion increased rejection while non-electrostatic interactions decreased rejection. The study suggests that PFCs could interact with membranes in thermodynamics, with head groups away from the membrane surface and tail groups close to the membrane surface.

Improved electrical driving current of electrochemical treatment of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) in water using Boron-Doped Diamond anode

Suratsawadee Sukeesan et al.

Summary: The study developed an efficient electrochemical oxidation (EO) system to remove PFAS from water by reducing the physical resistance of the titanium connector using Boron-Doped Diamond (BDD) and titanium electrodes. The system showed higher removal efficiency for PFOS, PFHxS, and PFOA with low energy consumption due to the reduced resistance. The conductivity with low resistance increased approximately 1.3 times compared to higher resistance levels.
