Application of external carbon source in heterotrophic denitrification of domestic sewage: A review

Xinrong Fu et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the effects of liquid, solid, and gaseous carbon sources on denitrification, finding that sodium acetate is the preferred external carbon source, biodegradable polymers perform better in solid-phase denitrification but have a higher price, and methane can be used as a gaseous carbon source. Liquid carbon sources are better controlled and utilized, and high carbon to nitrogen ratio, hydraulic retention time, and temperature promote denitrification.

Achieving simultaneous nitrification, denitrification, and phosphorus removal in pilot-scale flow-through biofilm reactor with low dissolved oxygen concentrations: Performance and mechanisms

Chao Wang et al.

Summary: In this pilot-scale study, a flow-through biofilm reactor (FTBR) was found to be efficient for municipal wastewater treatment, achieving high removal rates of ammonium, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and chemical oxygen demand. The FTBR demonstrated the feasibility and robustness of a simultaneous nitrification, denitrification, and phosphorous removal process. The complex interactions of bacteria in the dynamic biofilm and cooperative interactions of bacteria in the suspended sludge were also observed. The study provides insights into the ecological mechanisms responsible for nutrient removal.

Enhanced biological nitrogen removal under low dissolved oxygen in an anaerobic-anoxic-oxic system: Kinetics, stoichiometry and microbial community

Lin Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that specific nitrification and denitrification rates increased under low dissolved oxygen conditions, with a decrease in the oxygen half saturation constant for both ammonia oxidizing bacteria and nitrite oxidizing bacteria. The observed yield coefficients also increased, along with higher relative abundances of AOB, NOB, and denitrifiers detected through high-throughput sequencing. Improved simultaneous nitrification and denitrification under low DO conditions contributed to enhanced nitrogen removal.

Wastewater COD characterization: RBCOD and SBCOD characterization analysis methods

Jingbing Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a comprehensive evaluation of biodegradable organic matters in wastewater was conducted using the respirometry method, confirming the optimal initial substrate to biomass ratio and obtaining degradation curves for rapidly and slowly biodegradable COD components. Based on the results, a suitable wastewater COD characterization method for RBCOD and SBCOD was proposed, providing strong support for effective process design, diagnosis, and optimization of WWTPs.

Long-Term Low Dissolved Oxygen Operation Decreases N2O Emissions in the Activated Sludge Process

Guoqiang Liu et al.

Summary: The study showed that short-term low dissolved oxygen increased N2O emissions, while long-term low DO decreased emissions by increasing the abundance of ammonia oxidizers in the ASP. Long-term low DO reduced AOB abundance but increased AOA, with AOA potentially inhibiting N2O production. The positive correlation between N2O emissions and nitrite concentration became insignificant after 80 days of low DO operation, suggesting that ASPs can reduce N2O production and CO2 emissions by operating with low DO and extended sludge age.

Kinetic characterization of a low-dissolved-oxygen oxic-anoxic process treating low COD/N tropical wastewater revealed selection of nitrifiers with high substrate affinity

Seow Wah How et al.

Summary: This study simulated and calibrated the low-DO OA process in tropical wastewater treatment plants based on the ASM1 model, revealing that the microbes in the low-DO OA SBR had lower growth rates and affinities, supporting the proliferation of nitrifiers under low-dissolved-oxygen conditions. The research emphasizes the importance of using suitable parameters in the design of wastewater treatment plants in tropical regions.

Summary: Tests on the semi-full scale Thermophilic Alternate Membrane Biological Reactor revealed high COD removal yields, low specific sludge production, and the potential for using aqueous carbon residue in denitrification processes. The ThAlMBR demonstrated compatibility with diverse sludge line points and ensured important sludge minimization in both thickened and digested biological sewage sludge.

Phiak Kim Poh et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of temperature on tropical inoculated EBPR systems, concluding that the system remained stable at 30 degrees Celsius with high P-removal efficiency. However, the system deteriorated at 40 degrees Celsius and the threshold temperature for tropical EBPR failure was found to be between 35 and 40 degrees Celsius.

Performance of Full-Scale Thermophilic Membrane Bioreactor and Assessment of the Effect of the Aqueous Residue on Mesophilic Biological Activity

Maria Cristina Collivignarelli et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of one of the two full-scale thermophilic membrane bioreactors in Italy, showing that removal yields on chemical pollutants increased with input load, while sludge production remained low during stability. Oxygen uptake rate tests excluded the acute inhibition of mesophilic biomass by aqueous residues, except for certain substrates. Respirometric tests proved to be a valuable tool for assessing the acute effects of ThMBR's aqueous residues on mesophilic biomass.
