Crystallographic preferred orientation (CPO) patterns in uniaxially compressed deuterated ice: quantitative analysis of historical data

Nicholas J. R. Hunter et al.

Summary: Strain, temperature, and strain rate are crucial factors affecting the development of crystallographic preferred orientations (CPO) in ice. Strain has the main influence on CPO strength, while temperature and strain rate have minor influences. The observation of cluster patterns in both pure and simple shear deformed ice complicates the interpretation of flow geometry in terrestrial ice unless the prismatic axis patterns are considered.

On the Limitations of Using Polarimetric Radar Sounding to Infer the Crystal Orientation Fabric of Ice Masses

Nicholas M. Rathmann et al.

Summary: This study introduces a transfer matrix model for analyzing radio-wave propagation through layered anisotropic ice. The model investigates the impact of crystal orientation fabrics without a vertical principal direction on polarimetric radar returns over glaciers and ice sheets. The analysis suggests that radar returns are relatively insensitive to a nonvertical principal direction of the harmonic mode, but only for normally incident waves. This has implications for determining the full second-order structure tensor and representing the directional viscosity structure of glacier ice for ice-flow modeling.

Shear-margin melting causes stronger transient ice discharge than ice-stream melting in idealized simulations

Johannes Feldmann et al.

Summary: Basal ice-shelf melting is the key driver of Antarctica's increasing sea-level contribution. The simulations show that melting below the shear margins of the ice shelf can cause a larger increase in ice discharge compared to a similar perturbation in the ice-stream region. This is due to the fast flow of the central ice stream that effectively attenuates melting-induced ice-shelf thinning in the central grounding-line region.

Microstructure and Crystallographic Preferred Orientations of an Azimuthally Oriented Ice Core from a Lateral Shear Margin: Priestley Glacier, Antarctica

Rilee E. Thomas et al.

Summary: The study of the ice core microstructure from Priestley Glacier in Antarctica revealed the presence of subgrain rotation and recrystallization by grain boundary migration. The structural heterogeneity in the glacier shear margin occurs at different scales, and may be related to the rigid rotation of ice blocks.

Microstructures in a shear margin: Jarvis Glacier, Alaska

Christopher Gerbi et al.

Summary: The microstructures within the margin of streaming ice play a significant role in controlling flow dynamics. Despite the challenging conditions of warm ice, abundant water, and a short flow distance, various aspects of the microstructure, including measurable crystallographic fabric, evolve in systematic ways.

A massive rock and ice avalanche caused the 2021 disaster at Chamoli, Indian Himalaya

D. H. Shugar et al.

Summary: On February 7, 2021, a catastrophic mass flow hit the Ronti Gad, Rishiganga, and Dhauliganga valleys in Chamoli, Uttarakhand, India, causing extensive devastation and casualties. The collapse of rock and glacier ice led to a debris flow that transported large boulders and scoured valley walls, highlighting issues related to monitoring and sustainable development in high-mountain environments like the Himalayas.

Acoustic velocity measurements for detecting the crystal orientation fabrics of a temperate ice core

Sebastian Hellmann et al.

Summary: The seismic anisotropy and velocity profiles of ice core samples can be obtained through acoustic wave measurements and COF analysis, allowing for comparison between the two methods. Consistent results are achieved when the number of grains in the sampling volume is similar, but significant differences in velocity are observed when large ice grains are present. The discrepancy decreases with an increasing number of grains, highlighting the importance of grain size in determining the results of both methods.

Crystallographic analysis of temperate ice on Rhonegletscher, Swiss Alps

Sebastian Hellmann et al.

Summary: Crystal orientation fabric (COF) analysis provides valuable information about the c-axis orientation of ice grains and microstructural anisotropy within glaciers. Through detailed sampling and monitoring, it is possible to determine glacier flow direction and stress distribution, offering insights into deformation processes within glaciers.

Summary: This study uses cryo-electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) to investigate a axes and c axes orientations in coarse-grained ice for the first time, identifying potential sampling biases in previous studies that may have led to the discovery of multimaxima CPOs in warm, coarse-grained ice.
