Hydro-morphodynamics triggered by extreme riverine floods in a mega fluvial-tidal delta

Jie Wang et al.

Summary: Understanding the impact of extreme floods on deltaic systems is crucial for determining their long-term fate. This study used a model and field data to investigate the hydraulics and morphodynamics of extreme riverine floods in the Yangtze Delta in 2016. The results show that these floods can increase water levels, velocities, and bed shear stresses, leading to increased sediment transport and riverbed erosion downstream.

Fluvial sediment source to sink transfer at the Yellow River Delta: Quantifications, causes, and environmental impacts

Hongyu Ji et al.

Summary: Intensified human interventions in river basins and deltas lead to more complexities of environmental changes during the Anthropocene, especially a dramatic reduction in sediment delivery. This study focuses on the Yellow River Delta (YRD) and finds that the deltaic channel has transitioned from net accretion to erosion after the implementation of a water-sediment regulation scheme in 2002. The study also explores the sediment transport and source to sink process in the YRD using a combination of field measurements and numerical simulations.

Spatiotemporal dynamics of suspended particulate matter in the Bohai Sea, China over the past decade from the space perspective

Peng Li et al.

Summary: This study evaluated four SPM retrieval models developed for the Bohai Sea and selected the best performing model to investigate the spatiotemporal dynamics of SPM in the region from 2011 to 2021. The results showed a significant decadal decreasing trend in SPM concentrations, with seasonal variations controlled by storms and wind waves. High sediment transport from the Yellow River had a major influence on SPM concentrations.

Interactions of microplastics and antibiotic resistance genes and their effects on the aquaculture environments

Han Dong et al.

Summary: This review discusses the ecological effects of microplastics and antibiotic resistance genes in aquaculture environments. The widespread use of antibiotics in agricultural production leads to the presence of antibiotic residues in water and the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Additionally, water microplastics act as carriers of environmental microbes and antibiotic-resistant bacteria, potentially entering aquaculture environments and eventually the human body through food chains.

Dynamics of the extension of the Yellow River plume in the Bohai Sea

Xinyue Cheng et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the extension of the Yellow River plume is influenced by factors such as tides, sea surface heat, and wind. Understanding the dynamics of the extension of the Yellow River plume is crucial for better understanding physical and ecological processes, as well as for protecting fishery resources.

Phase change in evolution of the modern Huanghe (Yellow River) Delta: Process, pattern, and mechanisms

Naishuang Bi et al.

Summary: The modern Huanghe Delta used to be the most rapid land-building delta in the world, but its evolution has been affected by a decrease in sediment load from the Huanghe in recent decades. This study used bathymetric data and Landsat imagery to study the spatiotemporal evolution of the delta, revealing distinct patterns in the evolution of the active lobe and the abandoned lobe. The evolution of the active lobe was influenced by sediment load, hydrodynamic-morphologic interactions, and grain size of the sediment, while changes in sediment dispersals dominated the evolution of the abandoned lobe.

The modern Yellow River Delta in transition: Causes and implications

Yutao Fu et al.

Summary: The modern Yellow River Delta has transitioned from accretion to erosion over the past 160 years due to reduced sediment supply, impacting both the subaerial and subaqueous delta. The long-term erosion-deposition patterns of the deltaic system are influenced by changes in sediment input, with extreme events such as storm surges and strong winds causing short-term fluctuations in erosion/deposition. This study provides insights that could help guide the sustainable development of river deltas worldwide facing climate change and human interventions.
