Emerging Issues on Tropane Alkaloid Contamination of Food in Europe

Monique de Nijs et al.

Summary: A study was conducted on the occurrence of tropane alkaloids (TAs), toxic plant metabolites, in food in Europe to identify the most relevant TAs for human health. Calystegines were found to be inherent TAs in commonly consumed European foods such as potato, eggplant, bell pepper, and broccoli. Additional low-molecular-weight tropanes and Convolvulaceae-type TAs were also detected in bell pepper. Furthermore, emerging TAs like atropine, scopolamine, convolvine, pseudotropine, and tropine were associated with the presence of weeds in food. The need for monitoring data and collaboration among food safety authorities, farmers, plant breeders, and food businesses to prevent the spread of invasive weeds and raise awareness was emphasized.

Insight into the Impact of Food Processing and Culinary Preparations on the Stability and Content of Plant Alkaloids Considered as Natural Food Contaminants

Natalia Casado et al.

Summary: Pyrrolizidine alkaloids, tropane alkaloids, and opium alkaloids are natural plant toxins that are of great concern in food safety due to their presence in various foods and feeds. Despite recent legislation, the concentration levels of these toxins often exceed the maximum limits established by authorities. Moreover, the regulations primarily focus on raw materials and do not consider processed products. Therefore, it is crucial to assess the health risk associated with these alkaloids through diet. This review aims to provide insight into these alkaloids and their influence on content and stability during food processing and culinary preparation, highlighting the need for further research to understand their transformation and determine the exact risk exposure to the population.

The Bright and Dark Sides of Herbal Infusions: Assessment of Antioxidant Capacity and Determination of Tropane Alkaloids

Ana Rita Soares Mateus et al.

Summary: Herbal infusions are popular beverages known for their health benefits and antioxidants. This study developed a method to determine tropane alkaloids in herbal infusions, while also evaluating their antioxidant capacity. The presence of atropine in one of the samples exceeded the European regulation. Yerba mate, lemon balm, and peppermint were found to have high antioxidant capacity.

A review of drying technology in tea sector of industrial, non-conventional and renewable energy based drying systems

K. Ravi Kumar et al.

Summary: Drying is a crucial step in tea processing, which enhances stability and shelf life. Research on various drying techniques such as endless chain pressure drier, fluidized bed drier, and vibration-fluidized bed drier has been discussed. Renewable energy-based drying systems, including solar energy and thermal energy storage, are proposed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

In-house validation and application of UHPLC-MS/MS method for the quantification of pyrrolizidine and tropane alkaloids in commercial honey bee-collected pollen, teas and herbal infusions purchased on Italian market in 2019-2020 referring to recent European Union regulations

Marianna Martinello et al.

Summary: Two analytical methods for quantification of PAs and TAs in honey bee-collected pollen, teas, and herbal infusions were developed and validated. The methods showed good linearity, accuracy, and robustness. The results of a preliminary investigation revealed that about half of the pollen samples contained PAs below the maximum limit, while two samples were contaminated with TAs. One-third of teas or herbal infusions contained PAs or TAs, with one sample exceeding the EU limits for both PAs and TAs.

Occurrence and Chemistry of Tropane Alkaloids in Foods, with a Focus on Sample Analysis Methods: A Review on Recent Trends and Technological Advances

Lorena Gonzalez-Gomez et al.

Summary: This review collects available data on the occurrence of Tropane alkaloids (TAs) in foods and provides the latest techniques for food sample preparation from 2015 to present. Cereals and related products, as well as teas and herbal teas, are the most extensively analyzed food categories. Solid-liquid extraction remains the most widely used technique for sample preparation, but other extraction and purification techniques are also being applied.

A green analytical method for the simultaneous determination of 30 tropane and pyrrolizidine alkaloids and their N-oxides in teas and herbs for infusions by LC-Q-Orbitrap HRMS

Nuria Leon et al.

Summary: A green analytical method has been developed to determine the levels of 30 tropane and pyrrolizidine alkaloids and their N-oxides in dried teas and herbs. The method combines the QuEChERS procedure with LC-Q-Orbitrap HRMS analysis. The method has been validated and shown to have satisfactory performance in different tea and herb matrices. The results also demonstrate that the analyzed tea and herb samples comply with European regulations.

Tea phenolics as prebiotics

Zhibin Liu et al.

Summary: Due to the low bioavailability of tea phenolics in the small intestine, their interaction with gut microbiota in the colon is important for their beneficial health effects. Phenolics from green and black tea have similar prebiotic effects and provide various health benefits through antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, gut barrier protection, and bile acid metabolism regulatory effects. Understanding the prebiotic effects of tea phenolics may lead to their application in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

Uptake and accumulation of pyrrolizidine alkaloids in the tissues of maize (Zea mays L.) plants from the soil of a 4-year-old Chromolaena odorata dominated fallow farmland

Emmanuel Letsyo et al.

Summary: The study found that burning or mulching Chromolaena odorata residues could lead to the leaching of toxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids, affecting maize plants. However, slash-and-burn agricultural practices may reduce the long-term accumulation of toxic substances in maize.

Determination of atropine and scopolamine in spinach-based products contaminated with genus Datura by UHPLC-MS/MS

Delia Castilla-Fernandez et al.

Summary: Datura species are known for their high concentration of tropane alkaloids, which can lead to poisoning when accidentally mixed with edible crops. Testing on frozen spinach and spinach-based infant food products found that some samples had levels close to the maximum limits set by the European Union. This highlights the global concern over the presence of these compounds in various commodities.
