Historical Structure from Motion (HSfM): Automated processing of historical aerial photographs for long-term topographic change analysis

Friedrich Knuth et al.

Summary: Archives of historical aerial photographs can be used to augment long-term records of quantitative landscape change, but manual processing tasks hinder efficiency. We developed an automated method to generate high-resolution DEMs and orthoimages from historical images without manual GCP selection. Our method corrects camera position errors and produces accurate georeferenced products, regardless of camera configuration or terrain characteristics.

REMOTE SURVEY OF TRADITIONAL DWELLINGS USING ADVANCED PHOTOGRAMMETRY INTEGRATED WITH ARCHIVAL DATA: THE CASE OF LISBON

S. Stellacci et al.

Summary: The application of advanced photogrammetry and the integration of cross-sourced maps of historic cityscapes contribute to a thorough understanding of our surrounding. This research in Portugal utilized remote surveys, analysis of building dossiers, and onsite surveys to study traditional building typology. By virtually reconstructing two 16th century timber-framed facades, insights were gained into the past and present state of the buildings. The study emphasizes the importance of integrating different tools and databases for a more sensitive heritage management.

Dimitri Gominski et al.

Summary: This article discusses the challenge of understanding and connecting historical territorial imagery collections through content-based image retrieval, introducing the alegoria benchmark which contains mixed multi-date vertical and oblique aerial digitized photography with modern street-level pictures. The study proposes to address the low-data, heterogeneous image retrieval problem by reviewing ideas and methods, comparing state-of-the-art descriptors, and introducing a new multi-descriptor diffusion method to exploit their strengths. Results highlight the benefits of combining descriptors and the trade-off between absolute and cross-domain performance.
