Performance evaluation of CFSR, MERRA-2 and TRMM3B42 data sets in simulating river discharge of data-scarce tropical catchments: a case study of Manafwa, Uganda

Nakkazi Maria Theresa et al.

Summary: Data scarcity is a major issue in hydrological modelling, especially in tropical regions. This study evaluates the performance of three reanalysis datasets in hydrological modelling of the Manafwa Catchment, Uganda, showing that bias-corrected MERRA-2, CFSR and TRMM data can be effectively used for simulating river discharge in data-scarce areas like tropical catchments in Uganda.

Comparison of Wildfire Meteorology and Climate at the Adriatic Coast and Southeast Australia

Ivana Cavlina Tomasevic et al.

Summary: Wildfire is a complex natural hazard influenced by a combination of factors, with each fire being unique. Common meteorological and climate factors contribute to high fire risk before ignition occurs. Researchers are studying different regions to better understand the drivers of wildfires and to evaluate fire potential under climate change.

Pollution characteristics of black carbon based on MERRA-2 reanalysis data in core city of Central Plains Economic Zone, China: Historical trend and potential sources

Guangxuan Yan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the historical trends and factors affecting the variation of black carbon (BC) in Zhengzhou, China. It finds that BC concentration rapidly increased in two periods from 1980 to 1989 and 1999 to 2006, followed by a slower increase. Since 2012, the implementation of emission control strategies has led to a downward trend in total BC emissions. However, coal and coke remain the main factors affecting BC concentration in Zhengzhou. Transportation has become a significant contributor to BC since 2016. Winter experiences the highest BC concentration due to increased industry and residential emissions. The study also identifies potential source regions and types of BC in Zhengzhou and links regional transport to the high BC loading.

Analysis of wildfires and associated emissions during the recent strong ENSO phases in Southern Africa using multi-source remotely-derived products

Lerato Shikwambana et al.

Summary: The study looks at the spatial distribution of wildfires and emissions during strong El Nino and La Nina phases in southern Africa, as well as the effects of severe El Nino and La Nina years on the relationship between emission parameters, vegetation parameters, and climatic parameters. The results suggest higher emissions from wildfires during the El Nino phase compared to the La Nina phase, with Pearson's correlation showing clear influences and relationships between climate and emission parameters.

Five-satellite-sensor study of the rapid decline of wildfire smoke in the stratosphere

Bengt G. Martinsson et al.

Summary: Smoke from western North American wildfires reached the stratosphere in large amounts in August 2017. Satellite-based sensors are commonly used for studying wildfire aerosol injected into the stratosphere, but they are inadequate for the first 1-2 months after a strong fire event. The nadir-viewing lidar CALIOP is less affected and provides a means to correct for signal attenuation. CALIOP data shows that the stratospheric AOD of wildfire smoke exponentially declines during the first month after the fire, coinciding with significant changes in its optical properties.

Moisture content thresholds for ignition and rate of fire spread for various dead fuels in northeast forest ecosystems of China

Maombi Mbusa Masinda et al.

Summary: Fuel moisture content is an important factor in determining ignition probability and fire behavior in forest ecosystems. The study found that both the ignition source and wind speed significantly affected ignition and fire spread thresholds, with different fuels showing variability in moisture content during ignition and fire spread.

Observations of Emissions and the Influence of Meteorological Conditions during Wildfires: A Case Study in the USA, Brazil, and Australia during the 2018/19 Period

Lerato Shikwambana et al.

Summary: Wildfires have significant impacts on air quality, human health, climate change, and the environment. This study focused on wildfires in the USA, Brazil, and Australia, analyzing the distribution of black carbon, carbon monoxide, and smoke. Despite similar meteorological conditions, there were differences in the number of active fires and atmospheric constituent emissions at each site.

Online sequential extreme studentized deviate tests for anomaly detection in streaming data with varying patterns

Minho Ryu et al.

Summary: In the new era of big data, the importance of real-time contextual anomaly detection is rapidly increasing. Many anomaly detection algorithms have weaknesses in dealing with streaming time-series data containing different patterns. This paper proposes an online contextual anomaly detection method that shows a clear advantage in analyzing streaming data with varying patterns.
